I find (personally) these menus curious, not very ergonomic and I confirm that when I point to an icon of the left menu, a horizontal line appears but no text is displayed to give the function of the icon.
By "left menu" you mean the toolbar? And you talk about tooltips not being shown correctly? More info, please, at least what desktop environment you use in your (probably) Ubuntu or some derivate of it. Works just fine for me as well.

Version 4.8.8 had the Text, Tides and other icons that disappeared because in the right menu, when I ask the personal menu, no options or selection is offered.
What is "personal menu", please?

That's what I had noticed on version 4.9.9 but I thought that since it was a beta version, it would be fixed.
Problems not reported during the beta testing do not get fixed, obviously...

I hope this is a bug and that there will be return of these options otherwise I will look (if someone has the package for Ubuntu) to reinstall the old version.
If by "return of these options" and "bug" you mean that you want exactly the same buttons to be in the toolbar again, then no, that is not a bug and they will not return. Sure not in 5.0.x releases.

Thanks

I noticed that in the preferences, it had now lost the name of the fingerprint file and the system key ... so I copied those names into the config file, from my account on o-charts, I used the full path for the name of the fprint file. The file still exists on the machine, and I hade taken an external backup, just in case.

Now, it will get as far as the accept agreement button, and as soon as I click it, it crashes.

Should I just delete it all and start over? re-using the fingerprint file is essential, as I don't have any spare slots on o-charts now.

Just to update, I ran opencpn as a different user, fresh .opencpn dir and all that ... 2.9.x version of pi plugin, stock raspbian (xenial) ... I get the list of charts OK, I can download the chart OK, it unzips and I can (briefly) see the chart outlines but there is no detail, then I get the "accept licence agreement" splashscreen, and clicking accept causes the program to exit.

All I see on the terminal I ran it from is "vklsmd: 0" "Bus Error", I can't capture it to a file on std err, so I suspect it is being emitted by a sub process.

LennartG....
I don't see how it could declare 2.4.0 to be the latest version unless.....

Have you updated your sources by saying:

$sudo apt-get update

??

It looks as though your UserKey may be corrupted or invalid.
I will investigate further, trying to reproduce your error.

As Hubert says, the .fpr file is not needed at runtime.
But on rPI, if you reformat your sdcard image, the UserKey may indeed become invalid.

The card has not been reformatted ... although I suspect the .fpr was generated and uploaded with the 2.4.0 plugin ... could that screw things?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

Absolutely! I have been using OpenSource to power my internet based business since .. 1999, exclusively on Linux.

There is nothing worse than being tied in to closed source products and worse, closed source hardware. I was in the process of installing a Raymarine plotter and in the end, I could not bring myself to purchase the multiple cables at $90 each to hook it up, when I know they are a $10 item.

It may take a bit more effort, but I know OpenCPN will be worth it in th end. What finally convinced me to abandon the Raymarine plotter was watching a YouTube channel (SV Delos) and they were running OpenCPN in the cockpit!

So yes, absolutely, a massive thankyou to the guys/gals that have developed this!

I don't know what charts you are using, exactly.
But try this:
In the directory where the charts are installed, look for a file called Chartinfo.txt. Temporarily rename this file to something like ci.sav.

Then try starting OCPN again normally.

Dave

I'm trying to run the UK/Ireland charts

renaming that file, program runs, no chart outlines shown, no agreement splashscreen, then it crashes, as before, renaming the file back to Chartinfo.txt doesnt help. Same bahaviour, no splashscreen, dies with that bus error, each run leaves a zombie oeserverd process.

The userkey shown in the Chartinfo.txt matches that on the o-charts accoutn page and matches the string stored in the opencpn.conf file.

OK, time for some hard core debugging, since I cannot reproduce it.

Do this:

$sudo apt-get install gdb

$gdb /usr/bin/opencpn (if that is where it is...)

When gdb load settles down to (gdb)....type

run

Make O fail. gdb will break.

type:
bt

Report results.
Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

Also worth asking:
Has this system hardware config (especially including the power supply) successfully run OCPN with oesenc previously?

You might also try manually disabling the oesenc_pi in the config file, and restarting.
Then move initial viewport to somewhere other than UK/Ireland, and restart. On that restart, enable the oesenc_pi, switch to single chart mode, and "sneak up" on UK. We might some useful log info that way.

For all this you may leave Chartinfo renamed and inactive. It can be distracting to debug efforts.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released- Dashboard bug

If the Dashboard vertical height is changed and the Dashboard closed by the red 'X' (instead of toggling on the taskbar icon), on a subsequent opening of the Dashboard the vertical height change is not retained, showing the default height. It is also then locked to the default height until closing and opening OpenCPN 5.

Changing the horizontal width acts properly, regardless of using either the red 'X' or clicking on the taskbar icon.

A quick fix would be to remove the red 'X'.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Released

Dave,
my system is fully updated, before and after the OpenCPN upgrade. Could be that some 'recommended packages' are not installed.

Did some more tests and took some additional notes on the vector start display problem, FWIW:
- Disabling OpenGL crashes OpenCPN instantly
- Rebooting with OpenGL disabled eventually works fine (the display problem is gone) but most of the time crashes OpenCPN with the same log file errors as before. When it craches, then it is right after the oeSENC message window has been enabled.
- Restarting manually works fine with or without OpenGL enabled.
- Shut-down time is much longer (say 10 times) with 5.0 compared with 4.8.8 but not as bad when OpenGL is disabled.
So this seem related to OpenGL somehow.

'glxinfo | grep version' returns:
server glx version string: 1.4
client glx version string: 1.4
GLX version: 1.4
Max core profile version: 4.2
Max compat profile version: 3.0
Max GLES1 profile version: 1.1
Max GLES[23] profile version: 3.0
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.2 (Core Profile) Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.20
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.0 Mesa 18.0.5
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.00

Hi Paul,

I have tried to use new version of your program. I uninstalled GE2KAP 34.0.0.9 and installed Sat2Chart downloaded from your site, but I have an error like in attachment.

Do I need any special steps to perform before using new version of "GE2KAP"

Thanks for your great tool,

Pawel
