Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

I found a 4.0 dmg file with 29.1 MB, and moved it to a flash drive. The 4.8.4 dmg file is 45 MB, and the program installed in applications is 91 MB. Did I get all the 4.0 files?

My data(tracks, waypoints, etc.) did not show up on 4.8.4 when I open it.

Thanks again for your help. I hope we are making progress.

The DMG file is a read only, compressed, disk image, like an ISO file with CD contents you sure know from Windows. There is no "data" in it, just the application bundle.
If you never installed OpenCPN 4.0 by pulling it to Applications folder and were always running it from this image, which it seems what you were doing, your tracks and waypoints you created in it are now in a wrong place and you have to move them to the correct location where your, now correctly installed, OpenCPN 4.8.4 is looking for them. To do it, exit OpenCPN (Any version you might have open), open your Terminal and type the following command:
Code:
cp ~/Library/Preferences/navobj.xml ~/Library/Preferences/opencpn/navobj.xml
and hit Enter.

BEWARE: The above assumes you still don't have any routes, tracks or waypoints created in 4.8.4 as they would be overwritten and lost. If you do, manually export data from 4.0 as GPX and import to 4.8.4.

Then delete the 4.0 DMG image and forget you have ever had it.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

I couldn't get there through terminal, but I found the file. It has the one waypoint I added in 4.8. I found no files for 4.0, but I did not have much in data anyway. I have to admit, I am learning some valuable things about OS file management with help. Thank you.

I did find a library/preferences/navobj.xml file also, and assume it is my old data. How do I get it to version 4.8?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

As explained above, you copy it over to /Library/Preferences/opencpn
Or import as GPX.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the updates. It is working great except the handling of s57 correction files. It was similar to 4.8.2. It was the same old problem with incremental updates to S57 cell in Hong Kong. Previously, there was problems with cell 503E when it hit correction .033. We have a reissue of the cell that incorporated corrections up to .035. You may want to have a look.

Right now, there is similar problem with a new cell 505W. It failed to update when it hit .004. This 505W cell is a 2018 version. I attached a link to the files in OneDrive for your reference. Please have a look to see if you can spot something wrong.

I do received information that these correction files in question were handled successfully with other ENC viewer. There might be something different between OpenCPN and other program.

For a electronic charts authority to publish something non-conformance to adopted standards is a huge problem that will not go unnoticed. That let me think that the error might be limited to OpenCPN. Anyway, I do think that there will be a solution to it.

And, I would prefer another approach to correction error handling. For now, all the corrections after the first error will be ignored. Why not just skipped the one in error and try to apply whatever good corrections. In this case, we have at least have a chart with most of the good corrections except the error. A chart with most updated corrections in place should be better than a chart with no updated correction at all. What matters perhaps is something to tell users that the chart may not be completely updated. What do you think?

Thanks, best regards,

Bruce

Everybody does. We may sure argue whether this change, associated with SVG icon support and some other changes is for good or no.

If u ask for a opinion the WP rows has to extended heights. If possible smaller icons would be nicer.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

successfully loaded OC4.8.4 in linux, and it works quite nicely, save one quirk--

in Layers, the invisible layers, or "eye" function, is erased on a hard restart (as in OC is not closed first). thus each layer has to be closed again. This is not the case under win7 and OC4.8.0.

Is this a function of my setup, a quirk of linux , or something else? is there a remedy?

Thanks in advance

For info bcdcat has fixed this for coming OCPN 5.0. Now in master. Looks very fine when I tested it in Win10.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

I would like to back up and copy my user data to my desktop. However, I can no longer find the file, library/preferences/opencpn/navobj.xml. In fact, I cannot find any OpenCPN files in preferences on my macbook or desktop. They were there when I made some inquiries on this help board 6 or 8 weeks ago. I know my data is up to date in my macbook which I just used on a Bahamas trip. OpenCPN was awesome.

Any ideas on where the file is located?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.4 Released

Exactly where they were back then - in ~/Library/Preferences/opencpn
~ means your user’s home directory
