From memory it wasn't just Opencpn which didn't get on very well with the driver, using openplotter the display just wasn't very nice to use, areas blacked out until you made a window active etc and sometimes crashed the whole system. I'll have another go with it at some point but as the Pi was being used for real on long passages I haven't been using the driver, stability is more important.

Did the latest Kernel upgrade today and now with the VC4 (OpenGL) experimental driver to "on", the system does no longer boot. No idea what has been the cause of this.

Good to know if you like to try OpenGL.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Basis OpenPlotter 0,8

done the upgrades

do not update kernel version !!

upgraded OpenCPN tot 4.4.0

Raspian Graphics set on 144

Suppres blur to on
Chart zoom -3

Vector chart display:
declutter Text
Reduced detail

Activated the GL driver in raspi-config

Set OpenGL to on

Don't zoom in more than 8000 (0,20)

Then OpenCPN is working with very fast screen movement.

As stated, it is still experimental, but gives an impression what is possible.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Is the result identical with raspberry 2 and 3? If not, I need to get a raspberry 3.

In a few weeks I can get what I need to fix all the problems, but it cost $20 for a simple usb sd reader here so I don't buy it.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Dear B-A,

the outcome is the same on the Pi2 and Pi3. Don't update to the latest kernel only the other updates.

I use the Raspian Linux version as in OpenPlotter 0.8. which has some nice add-ons.

Don't zoom in more then scale 8000 (0,20)

Then the OpenCPN charts are "flying" over the screen.

Grib plugin works, but gives a complete green screen when on. This goes away after closing Grib.

If this gonna work perfect. Then it is really a breakthrough for the "PI" navigation.

But does the new kernel and the upcoming kernel 4.5 break the present VC4 driver ?

Regards from Zeeland (NL)

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

With the latest kernel updates the VC4 driver does not longer work. Locks the system. Blocking the VC4 driver OpenGL in config.txt then the system is back as before.

Kernel 4.4.14 7+ is now frequent updated and gives improved graphics support.

Screen movements are certainly faster. Kernel update ?

sudo apt-get rpi-update.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

With latest kernel update OpenGL (VC4) works again.

Memory set at 144

2 Problems remain:

- zooming (-) higher then Scale 8000 (0,20) gives screen corruption.

- Grib to "on" gives a green screen. Grib to "off" the Chart is back again.

But with OpenGL to "on" it works very fast.

It looks if these problems are in OpenCPN.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

The latest kernel update 4.4.15-V7+ gives again a better performance for OpenGL.

- Still the problem with zooming out too far in OpenCPN.

- Green screen with Grib on.

- And the Tidal Graph shows only the time but not the graph itself.

But without zooming out too far, it can be used for navigation.

It would be interesting to see if the radar plugin also works. But I have no radar to try this.

Is this with the VC4 (OpenGL) driver activated ? Or without ?

Yes, the experimental VC4 OpenGL driver is enabled.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Just tried the latest kernel version 4.4.16-V7+ (sudo rpi-update).

OpenGL is now again more stable and zooming out goes well till 15600 0.10 x.

Sometimes the screen is fragmented. But by moving the screen left to right etc. The fragments disappear.

Still a green screen with switching on the Grib plugin. And no graphics with the tidal info.

Chart is a high resolution ENC.

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

post your log file. Did you try to disable accelerated panning in opencpn.conf?

Yes tried to set accel. panning on 0 instead of 1 with VI editor.

But after starting O the setting 1 is back again.

It all works till resolution 15600 0.10 x

And the chart becomes fragmented. Not a problem, because if you move the screen image from left-right etc, then the correct chart image is back again. The screen is cleaned up this way.

Bram

Re: OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi2

Here is the new BR24radar_pi in operation on an rpi3 with the new opengl driver.

It works with both Vertex Array and Shader GPU drawing methods.

The only modification required was to manually set the button heights in br24ControlsDialog. The auto sizing yielded buttons that were too small.
