OpenCPN Freezes

Hello,

I have had O running on my Windows 11 laptop for many months. It receives AIS data over UDP from a receiver locally at my house.

Lately O is freezing after a few minutes use and it looks like it is not getting AIS data, but vessels just remain on the display - i.e. not timed out.

I have tried to re-install the latest release, but to no avail. I hesitate to wipe out the user data since I paid for the Canadian charts though o-charts.

Note that there is no GPS attached, so the charts appear static on the screen.

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

Cheers, ....Erik. (ex-owner of m/v B.C. Girl)

Re: OpenCPN Freezes

Erik..
I've tried a similar set up on my W10. No position or other sensors. Just some hundred AIS targets from a Network (TCP) source. It's been running for hours without obstacles.
A shot in the dark: You could check your Options->Connections so there is only one connection for the same source?

BTW: There's is nothing in the config file, opencpn.ini, that a o-charts chart file license is dependent of. (Except a possible EULA agreement)

Re: OpenCPN Freezes

Hi Hakan,

No, there is only one communication input and it does sometimes (but not always) show up in the debug window.

Another problem is that chart segments go black when the mouse runs over part of the chart. I think something is badly corrupted, so I may have to wipe out the data files.

Are you saying that the o-charts remain even if I delete all data files?

Cheers, ....Erik.

Re: OpenCPN Freezes

Erik..
Not easy to figure out from your description but for the TCP connection, provided correct IP address and port, I'd have tried to disable the connection - Apply. After a while click enable and Apply.

You say you've updated OpenCPN itself? If not do so.
Also be sure you use OpenGL.
Options->Display->Advanced: [X] "Use accelerated....OpenGL"

o-charts:
First make sure you have the latest version of the plugin. After update or if already updated:
In Options->Charts->Chart files: Select "Force full database rebuild" - OK
Also if you still have a valid license to update the charts from o-charts do so.

I'm not sure what "data files" you refer to? Please describe.

The config file may of course have some strange settings, made by you accidentally or not, but normally it would not be the problem.

But you can always stop OCPN and delete or rename opencpn.ini. Then on next start a fresh one will be created and you have to reset all your settings like in Options->Charts->Chart files and again list your chart file locations, connections, plugins and more. If you don't know the paths for the charts make a screen shot before to help you remember.
O-charts license is as said not listed in the config file. It's the PC itself that has the key for your chart(s) license.

Re: OpenCPN Freezes

Hakan,

I couldn't turn OpenGL on as it was greyed out in the configuration screen, so I edited the *.ini file and it works as it should now.

Thanks for guiding me in the right direction.

I am really an ex-boater (30+ years), but I have a view over a busy navigation channel from my house and enjoy tracking the vessels around here.
