Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.630

Hi Dave
Seems to work fine
my first feeling :
The "basic" version is a very good idea.
but in the menu there, in my point of view some things missing
1) toogle show/hide AIS Target
2) exit O

Also when select "open settings", why not open the standard option dialogue ? The list of accessible options is too short:
nothing about AIS parameters, ship parameters, fonts, locking WPT etc ...
this will oblige even a beginner to use the expert option to access to these parameters

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.630

Thanks Dave for a new version,

New version working pretty good also on Samsung SM-T211.

I have CM93 charts and they all seem to be fine. Details, text, everything.

I get all my data from my wifi. GPS, AIS, Heading. GPS and heading are good.

But AIS is not working properly. It didn't work in the previous version either.

I see all my 50+ targets in the target list, but on the chart they don't stay on.

They show one at a time for about half a second.

Dave,

Enabling "National text on chart" did just that. Never had to do that before to display text on CM93 charts...

Philosophy follows...
This is precisely the point of "Basic" mode. I have spent some time lately watching beginners (sailors all) play with my Nexus7 running various flavors of OA. Sort of a tiny "focus group" experience. I've handed the device blindly to some local sailors, some of whom know OCPN already.

What I find is that beginners have no clue, nor interest in AIS parameters, fonts, locking, etc... When I try to teach them, their eyes glaze over. They just want to play with charts and see the boat icon in the right place by GPS fix. This is the magical essence of OCPN Android.

When I show them the full Expert settings dialog, they either a) give up, or b) get the configuration so scrambled that the device is unusable and OA needs to be restarted.

Sure, after a few hours, they will want more. So then they can study the documentation, engage "expert" mode, and have everything at their fingertips.

But the beginner's initial 5 minutes of interaction with the device is the critical time. Is it engaging, or frustrating?

So, we need "Basic" mode. We can add other items to BasicSettings, and more items to ActionBar overflow (three dots). And we should.

The question is: What do we need to add here that is a) useful, and b) understandable to beginners.

Thanks for the feedback
Dave

Jonna...

re:
AIS targets missing.

May I ask, "What time zone are you working with?" GMT+1 for summer?

This seems to be related....

Thanks
Dave

sy_gilana...

An arcane question, but...

Do you have your device set for developer options, especially the key "Don't Keep Activities" ?

Thanks for the feedback

Dave,

I changed my device time zone to GMT and now the AIS targets keep in place.

Thank you so far and keep up the good work

I am doing the same - getting GPS and AIS data over WiFi (UDP) from a Windows machine running OpenCPN.

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I am currently in time zone GMT+2
If I set my Android time to GMT+1 any AIS targets don't appear.
If I set my Android time to GMT+2 or GMT+3 the targets appear.
Alternatively, if I uncheck the options in Settings - Ships - AIS targets - Lost Targets, the AIS targets appear.
Dave - are you receiving and using times from the AIS/GPS?
This maybe how you have designed the Lost Targets logic.
Just an observation.

Other points
I still think that the fonts for CM93 depths are too small to read.

AIS Targets and Default Own Ship
IMO, these are too small as well

I've had a couple of messages from wxwidgets asking me if I want to continue - happened when I first loaded my charts and selected All Active charts.
Can't get it to do it again.

New Android style (Non Expert Mode) setup
Moving the User interface Scale Factor and Chart Display Factor and then pressing "back" doesn't seem to save the settings
EDIT - changing the sliders in the Normal OpenCPN Settings reflects their values in the Non Expert Android Settings page but they can't be changed in the Non Expert Android Settings page.

I also get the feeling that it is slower than the previous Beta.

I'll keep testing.

BTW - I appreciate that there is a lot of work in here since the last Beta - this will eventually be a really great tool.

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.630

Thanks for new version!
I uninstalled old and did as careful a cleanout as possible.

My device: Acer z22 Liquid 4"screen! android 5.0

notes I made in order with intent to take a Hapless Usr viewpoint:

Install went ok. My device offered to install to removeable sd card but that didn't happen. Still, sdcard0, internal is ok.

chart Load dialogue easier!!! yahoo good work...still, to get to external card needs some usr knowledge about their device ie: goto "storage" then "sdcard1"
Internal GPS works
Tides work!
Toggle "show depth units" does not work even on restart
making wpt
.works
.....but when properties dialogue opened.. impossible!got some blinking blinking and a crash when trying to touch something

Uses the fixed directory "/mnt/sdcard/opencpn" for all dynamic user data, including logfiles, config files, navobj.xml, and chartlist.dat.

you may add UserIcons and layers to the "/mnt/sdcard/opencpn" directory, and they will be recognized on load.
Does not
oh, I found it -not there precisely ...but as you say -paraphrased, "not needed on (hapless) voyage"
But Hapless Usr would ,I think, like a better default Mark Icon. No reason to use a tiny triangle. Something more visible from the Free icons collection...? Dead link but fromhttp://opencpn.org/ocpn/drupal/user_icons...

Re: OpenCPN for Android Beta test 4.1.630

Dave, ...I tried. Did not work. I can try again. Maybe a phone shutdown or reinstall will work when the folder exists as opencpn-A installs?

To get UserIcons to be seen....they had to go here to a folder I assume O-A created? because I thought I was diligent creating a really fresh install, if it's possible :

On PC,the path on Win7 TO my phone is Computer\Z220\Internal storage\Android\data\org.opencpn.opencpn\files
As to On android using a file manager, well I note that it agrees with the
opencpn.conf.Path is /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.opencpn.opencpn/files/
but it's more than I want to bother you with...
I think you are right to focus on Hapless.

and, I really tried to stay Simple,Dave- I did and I am... But I just find that Mark=triangle gets lost so easily.
