In the Expert Mode you can select the connections for incoming data.
If your USB device generates a virtual COM port (tty...) you can configure it there.

Hi, trying to help a bit with debugging. A working android app would be great . I hope you can use the feedback.

Installation on Samsung Galaxy S5 (lollipop 5.0) went smooth, installed on the phone not SD card. I saw no options for basic or expert mode pop up.

Main screen
The GPS did not seem to work in the beginning, although I intuitively ticked the boat icon top right. Then I tried menu OpenCPN setting to check GPS settings. The tick mark for internal GPS was on. Then tried pincing the overzoom worldmap, this caused an error see screenshot. The GPS started working though. Logfile pasted below, location: /primary/opencpn/opencpn.log

In the bottom part the letters for SOG etcetera were too small to read. The top right hand icons were too small to see what values are displayed, see screenshot 2 .

A help menu would be great using a ? icon or something.

Route manager: initially OK. But when landscaping the screen in order to better see the properties of the waypoints, the sliders a much too small to be able to use. See screenshot. Also, when I went back to portrait, the properties window blocked my view of the chart. When you touch the screen to make / drag the map visible, another waypoint is attached to the route unintentionally. Tapping the route manager icon top right did not stop the route manager, as I would have expected. Also, the route manager menu cannot be moved or expanded on the screen. In the end I had to close the app in order to get rid of the menu and restart the app. After restarting, the created route was still there on the screen. I'm not sure that should be the case of not.

Toggle ENC text: Nothing happened in overzoom map

Tides option: OK, but no zoom allowed in the overzoom. It took 1-2 seconds to show the tides.

Currents option: Nothing happened.

Additional point: I just noted that the top right icons have moved after restart to bottom right, behind the SOG text box, obscuring the icons. Screenshot.

for three map directories required three times traveling the complete route to the folder)

- Chart piano is turning black sometimes (no pattern detected yet)

- After looong search for the expert mode enabling network messages for AIS:
in landscape mode the options are off screen down below and the lateral slider does not work. Ok in portrait mode.

- In the NMEA window there are new sentences now with a talker ID of $PG:
PGLOR which bares not only the location data but also information about the power consumption and the internal serial connections
Other new IDs are $QZ and $IM. Did find only guessing in Internet about the meaning. Any known documentation?
$GN and $GL (plus $GP) are indicating different satellite constellations (US GPS, GLONASS,...)

- Not able to resize NMEA window by pulling the corners

- Minimizing the tool bar in expert mode renders the chart canvas grey - AIS targets, ownership etc are still rendered. Going from landscape to portrait or vice versa will bring the rendering back (does not happen always)

That's for the moment - good progress!

- Vector charts with black screen zooming in are French InlandENCs (Garonne from Bordeaux on)

- In the communication Tab "add connection" will require to define the properties parameters (IP, Port). In landscape mode these fields are outside of the visible window and you have in theory the vertical slider on the right side to access.
This slider does not work (what does work I'm seeing now is to pan the whole window up and down with the fingers)

Regarding RouteManager:

I think that we shall have to disable the routeManager ( and all other dialog screens) while a route is being created. There simply is not enough screen real estate to allow a good sized chart area as well as a navigable routeManager at the same time.

Anyway, it should be noted that there is really no standard way in Android UI to drag/move sub-windows on-screen. There are no window decorations like close/minimize, nor even a draggable title bar. Nor is there really a UI model for switching focus between multiple windows on-screen. Its just not the way Android UI works.

I'd like user comments on this idea, though....

At what scale does it go black? Precise cell/lat/lon? Does it recover on zoom out?

sorry, can't get it reproduced now - zooming out did not help before.
One had to zoom out blindly, pan to a different place - blindly as well - and at restart with the saved viewport you are back with charts.

The charts are south from Bordeaux 44º46N AND quilted with CM93.
I do remember some similar problems with CM93 in the pre 4.0 betas.
I did select Vector charts from the drop down now - ignored that previously.
With the InlandENCs built everything shows up correctly.
The piano turns black while processing pans/zooms.

From your question about Lat/Lon I found that I'm missing (done by design I suppose) the boat position and the cursor position/distance at the status line.
As hovering does not exist in the Android world, what about showing this data in the context menu - long tap?
Same with the chart info from the piano. (Your question about charts involved).

What I'm seeing is that the Android version is getting more and more different from the other architectures. So one "frozen version" at the Google shop that includes some of the plug-ins?
