Can't connect to the charts

I'm sure this is a trivial issue for most.

My computer seized up a couple of weeks ago and so I "rebuilt" it - thus losing all the applications but keeping my user data.

Until today, when I went to use it, I hadn't realized that I had lost OpenCPN - but of course I had.

So I re-installed it. And I put in the link to the oesenc chart pak I have (British Columbia) - but it's not bringing up those charts. All I have is the REALLY rough world-wide map.

Help! and thanks.

Re: Can't connect to the charts

New installation of the operating system (or some substantial changes to the hardware, or both) means it is a new system, you need to generate new system ID, register it with o-charts and redownload the charts. Or use the USB dongle, which is portable between different systems.

Re: Can't connect to the charts

Thanks for giving me the solution to my original problem. Your solution worked beautifully!

Now I have another question: under Options, under Charts, under Vector Charts, everything in the User Standard Objects column to the right is greyed out. I can't get light, or town, or geographical feature names - or anything else on the list - to show on my charts.

Help!

Pick "User" then you can select and turn off items. This is a safety for new users.

Sorry,

Where do I find "User"? I'm not seeing it anywhere.

To elaborate on the correct, but somewhat unfortunately formulated response from Rick:
At least one chart canvas must be set to User Standard display category for the user standard setting to work and be selectable in the Toolbox.

Interesting. I never would have found it without your help.

I turned on everything I wanted including "Show Text" under Vector Charts on the Chart Panel Options pop up - but I'm still not getting ANY text on my charts. Have you any ideas why that might be.

Thanks again.

Either press T or turn the text display on in the chart canvas menu.

Interesting. On the chart shown in your example lots of places, etc. are shown. On mine, even with "Show Text" checked, none of that comes up. I wonder if my chart data base (West Coast of Canada) is simply missing that layer?

Re: Can't connect to the charts

I have no Canadian charts, but this is how some of the NOAA ENCs for Washington state look, so you may try to download them and check your setup.

Re: Can't connect to the charts

Also note that you will see A LOT LESS texts on the charts if you have Important Text Only selected in the Toolbox -> Charts -> Vector Chart Display as for example the names of the objects are not considered to be important text by the ENC standard.

That was it! I guess just about all the text on Canadian charts is considered unimportant.

Everything is great now. Thanks again (and again )!

Re: Can't connect to the charts

This thread shows very well that OpenCPN is not intuitive to handle for the average sailor. Even the way using a good and small user manuel has been spoiled by some people. It is time to think about that matter.
