Building OpenCPN on a MacBook Pro

FWIW, I'm able to compile, build and run 823 with only one line change.
This is how I proceeded (on my MBP running 10.6.4 w/ Xcode 3.2.3)

1. Compile and install wxWidgets 2.8.11 using instructions from the Wiki
arch_flags="-arch i386"
./configure CFLAGS="$arch_flags" CXXFLAGS="$arch_flags" CPPFLAGS="$arch_flags" LDFLAGS="$arch_flags" OBJCFLAGS="$arch_flags" OBJCXXFLAGS="$arch_flags"

2. Create an Xcode project with a few settings (includes for wx, a couple -D, compile for i386 only on 32-bit). Add all of src and include to a project. Take out the files that don't compile with a change in settings, take out some redundant files that cause linking to fail.

3. Removed the line (around 2890 in chart1.cpp)
SetToolBar((wxToolBar *)m_toolBar);
This causes OpenCPN to crash (suspecting SetToolBar doesn't exist for this class...).


I ran OpenCPN for a few minutes displaying some charts around Puget Sound and had no issues. The toolbar does appear normally, so I'm not clear what the line that I removed is used for

I'll see if I can make a self-contained package with all the libs if people are interested.

I've packaged the build to include the wxWidgets libraries - hopefully this makes the app installable on any recent Mac (Intel required) for folks who do not want to get into compiling anything.

Works great, thank you. Runs here without any problems on MacBookPro, Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X 10.6.4. Installation was fine, new chart indexing was very fast, even faster than the old version. All old settings from former version 1.3.6 was taken over by this new version.

What about some fine tuning now? I do not need the sound wave files, however how to make the implementation of the *.mo language files?

Because it seems to me the know-how to compile OCPN with OS X was gone with version 1.3.6 and is invented again now, what about a documentation for compiling OCPN for OS X?

installed fine on macbook 2.1 core 2 duo and works fine with kap files but when hitting the green dot to maximize it hides under the title bar also the depthunits are half hidden under the opencpn iconbar and when moving the cursor to the top it won't change to the panning arrow left right and down are okay.

I have installed the 823 build offered above and it mostly works fine. In one case changing the scale caused a window of vertical colored stripes (very narrow); I will keep an eye out for when that happens.

A minor niggle: the version number in the Finder is 1.0, so that should be updated with each revision.

The screen shot above shows the red/yellow/green dots in the upper left appropriate for a Mac window, but I don't get that on my computer. Unless that is a newer build, I would guess that we somehow are using a different version of wxWidgets. How might that be?

I too get the "Meters" indication chopped off by the toolbar.

I want to thank the folks who are moving the Mac version forward - it is much appreciated.

Sorry for the silence - this is a side project for me.
I prepared a zip that should help folks who want to be able to recompile themselves.

The zip should be extracted in the OpenCPN directory - it will create a macosx folder. In this folder are build notes and an Xcode project.

You will still need to compile wxWidgets separately (see the build notes for some hints), and do a one line code change (see build notes) to prevent the crash discussed several times earlier in this thread.

Regarding the observed crash: this will be hard to reproduce I guess. I've been using this build for a couple of hours with a combination of raster and vector charts from NOAA and haven't experienced any crash.

My next step is to update the build w/ the localization files as requested here, but at this point that's about all I can do. Hopefully having a reproducible build should increase the number of folks able to test & tinker.

I was able to compile v918 also now and have managed the localisation for other languages as well. The *.mo files will be installed with the PackageMaker and works fine.

However I could not find the error with the SeToolBar() function. Regarding the source there was no declaration to find for me. Commenting out the function results obviously into the hidden upper part of the chart as sv Aurelia has noticed already. Any hint is welcome.

Next step for me is to insert the plugin functionality.

Great! Regarding the SetToolBar source change: if the app doesn't crash for you, then no need to change. In my case, the app was crashing 100% always at that line, so for the combination of opencpn/wxwidgets that I used to compile, there was no other way to get OpenCPN working at all.
Did you use the same version of wxWidgets (2.8.11)? There might be a behavior change between versions. Also, I pulled the head of the source repository, not a specific version, so we may have been compiling different versions.

Might be you misunderstood me. The SetToolBar() line is still commented out. The source said something about a crash with DestroyMyToolBar() and has therefore some changings. But regarding the sources, DestroyMyToolBar() ist correctly referenced and works well. Only for SetToolBar() I could not find any references in the sources. So this might be the reason why it crashes when used. So version 918 works well without SetToolBar() and I just try to make the plugins usable for Macs also.
