Check out the similarity to this device. The geometry is very similar.

I just don’t get how the throat release works.

Mercifully its been solved by a cruiser to whom I’m eternally grateful, there’s a parallel thread with the original device and a photo of the beastie attached to the pole that it needs for deployment.
