Re: What is the best boat to circumnavigate with a two person crew

There are several versions of the Hirondelle, but I think the decks are all balsa-cored. Take a screwdriver and rap all over the deck, listening for a dull sound.
With some of these older boats the delamination might be evident in the odd contours of the interior or exterior surface.

Regarding the screwdriver comment, I should have specified that you want to rap the deck with the end of the handle making contact. Rapping with the pointy end may get you shot by the outraged owner.

I've sailed, as ranking tar, boats from 12-46 feet. I always said our Vancouver 27 was the easiest thing to sail. It was. It forgave the dumbest mistakes and I made a lot of them. A child can sail it.

We recently took ownership of a Tayana 37. Maybe I have to reassess my opinion.

The Tayana will sail better and easier. You'll be used to the bigger size very quickly, congrats!

Re: What is the best boat to circumnavigate with a two person crew

A question near and dear to my heart for a number of years so I'll share the following:
- not too big to "man handle" should equipment break
- big enough to hold food and water for five weeks plus an emergency stash
- built strongly enough so you won't worry about it coming apart
- built light enough to move reasonably well
- designed to provide a smooth ride in choppy seas
- designed to not wallow in rough swells

Confession: I have what I think is that perfect boat, a 1989 Pacific Seacraft 31 (the Crealock design), and it will soon be available on the market. (Lost my job and the prospects are not favorable for finding another.) If you're interested, send me a message.

Indeed, the Pacific Seacraft 31 has a good reputation and seems a comfortable boat from what I have seen. Good choice !

Re: What is the best boat to circumnavigate with a two person crew

I think many PS boats are very nice boats, but some have cockpit large enough to host a major portion of the ocean.

So, for an extended offshore adventure I would opt for something with either open cockpit or else a Westsail style cockpit tub.

The cockpit of our PS 34 is tiny compared to most other boats this size. It's also a pretty dry cockpit in most conditions, something about the shape of the bow.

Two PS from our last marina (34 and 37) made the trip from Newfoundland to Ireland, a rough passage at best. I've talked to both skippers and they credit the boat

We started living on our 34 three weeks ago. So far so good. The boat is a tank. We love it. And yes, it can sail upwind. And no, I am not trying to sell it.

Back to the OPs question.

I learned to sail on a small tri and I love multis. Multis are popular where I come from (Queensland) where tropical and subtropical conditions prevail.

But multis are rare on Lake Superior. There is probably good reason for that. I don't remember seeing many on Lake Michigan or Lake Erie either. I am guessing it is because dockage is at a premium and heavier conditions s prevail.

One more consideration. Consensus seems to be multis need to be much, much bigger to be safe for ocean crossings. Big multis cost an arm and a leg. It is probably going to be much, much less expensive taking the mono route.

What I like about the ps 34 cockpit is that it is just long enough to lay down in but small enough to keep everything within reach.

A Brunette of course.

Bristol 41.1 is a overbuilt boat, full keel, draws 4.5 feet with center board up, easy to single hand, lovely traditional lines, and will not break the bank.

The Pacific Seacraft 37 is a good choice, easy to single-hand, sea-kindly and with enough carrying capacity to get you across oceans.
