The word 'antique' springs to mind, they were one of the early GPS makers. Wonder if it still works?

A GPS? I've been around boats long before 1990, which was the age of the boat. Hmmmm.... Maybe there is a sundial on the top for the time piece.

Trimble was one of the first to offer small boat GPS. They got out of the small boat market a long time ago and now (I think) specialize in equipment for surveying via gps.

Marine survey? No idea. Makes more sense that it was added from a previous older boat when the first owners bought this one.

I've been all over the Trimble website, and the only things that looked similar had mirrors/prisms on it, sitting atop a pole that a surveyor's helper (rodman) walked along the survey route with.

Those you saw are 360° prisms used with robotic total stations. Your piece of equipment is most likely an older gps receiver that was capable of plugging into a laptop for navigation, just giving a position.

I've actually used Trimble gps equipment, haven't seen that exact piece, but it has to be something like that.

Bonus is, it is likely extremely accurate, if it still works.

Trimble made marine gps units that yiu could enter waypoints and nav Too. But no maps. Just dots and lines. ~15 years ago?

Over 30 years ago, I saw advertising for their ±$35,000 marine GPS unit.

Trimble Flightmate was the first GPS I flew with, we got them as we were going to Bosnia in Dec 1995

Trimble was good equipment

For a number of years I drove tractors and large farm machinery with Trimble gps autosteering gear. Phenomenal accuracy, regularly 30mm or just over an inch.
Their agriculture and industry gear is top notch.
