raymarine E70 uncommanded right turn

I have a raymarine E70 connected to an EV1 course computer. Prior to engaging it, it reads the correct mag. heading. Once the autopilot is engaged, it immediately commands a full rudder right turn. I have deleted all old saved waypoints to eliminate the possibility that it's seeking that. Raymarine tech support has not been able to successfully assist to a solution via telephone.

Anyone out there familiar with this problem and/or have a constructive suggestion to solve. The units are three years old.

Best Regards

Can you clarify the E70? E7D? P70? Or something else?

On what device, and what button are you pushing to engage the autopilot?

Have you tried going back through the autopilot commissioning/setup process?

Re: raymarine E70 uncommanded right turn

if you are just hitting auto, the e70 has nothing to do with it. only if you are trying to use nav mode. (actully there is no e70, only e80 or c70 and those are 15 years old... not 3)

do you have an auto pilot screen or only a chart plotter?

does the rudder gauge work when you move the wheel back and forth? in the correct way? a backwards one or if it fell off, will do that.

Re: raymarine E70 uncommanded right turn

I had this problem when setting up my Evo 1 for the first time which wasn't connected to any other instruments, used in a stand alone wheel pilot mode.

I had the two wires to the wheel drive round the wrong way and made a set up mistake in the software commissioning. Easily enough found and corrected, with no problems since.

What happens if you disconnect the E70 and try it in stand alone wheel pilot mode steering a course?

Maybe you have the autopilot set to "wind vane" mode? I vaguely remember have the same problem and it all started when I wanted to switch from "heading mode" to "wind vane" mode, or vice versa.

One time a hiccup, twice, I'd check the EV compass. Anything remotely metallic in the vicinity can cause erratic behavior. After that it gets complicated. I've had similar issues and reduced my SeatalkNG system to only three 'pieces' to finally discover the computer was screwed.

I had the same exact situation with an E series. I'll bet the problem is addressed in the autopilot head itself. Running through the setup you'll find something like, "calibrate rudder". I accepted the 30 degree rudder setting and it put us into a 360 degree turn and then locked onto the last heading setting. At that point all was well again. Hope it helps.

I had this exact problem.

check the rudder position indicator. may have a corroded spot or two. the wiper arm may have come loose. easy to fix, might be a boat yoga project to get to it.

I have this problem that I think is related to bad wires in the hand held device. I have two hand held controllers. One wireless and one wired that you plug in. It only does this problem when usng the wired one. I just recently sent it off to Raymarine to see if them wil repair. When it returns I will trial it. All last summer while on Auto it would be fine for an hour then all of a sudden try to do a 160 degree turn. However if I remove the hand held and just set the course on the auto pilot it worked fine. Jon

There is a you tube video by Patrick lane where he had similar symptoms. Might help. It turned out to be the flux gate compass which needed replacing.

OP has an EV1, so unlikely to have a fluxgate.

Re: raymarine E70 uncommanded right turn

Are you using the latest software? When I bought my EV1 and C90 in 2014 we nicknamed it Crazy Ivan after the soviet submarine maneuver in the movie Hunt for Red October. On occasion it would suddenly turn right. A software update fixed the problem. I take it this is a new problem with an old installation, not a problem with a new installation. Is that correct?
