Raymarine autopilot ram not moving

Hello All,
I have a sudden failure of my Raymarine autopilot. I have the Evo 1, Type 3 hydraulic pump and ram. When I engage the autopilot, I hear the pump running for approx 5 seconds then it stops. No movement of the ram, which is of course connected to the quadrant.
I have read to disconnect the rudder indicator, engage the autopilot and attempt to turn the wheel to see if the ram seals themselves have failed, but once the rudder indicator is disconnected and I engage the autopilot, the system alarms "no rudder indicator" and the pilot will not engage at all.
Where to start to isolate the issue?
The fluid level is steady in the reservoir; no fluid leaks.
Assuming I have to disconnect the ram and/or pump, suggestions to best contain the hydraulic fluid/keep the mess to a minimum.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Raymarine autopilot ram not moving

The Raymarine website says it needs a ACU 400 to run a type 3 pump. I wonder if you have cooked the ACU 100 drawing too much current.

Ev-1, ACU 400 is installed. I'm pretty sure this is a pump vs ram vs solenoid issue. Thanks.

Disconnect the clutch wiring and see if it will run for more than 5 seconds. If so you either have something jammed or a blockage in the hydraulic system. It could also be the pump running the wrong way, is the rudder hard over when it occurs, is so swap the motor wiring over and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The wheel turns freely and is not hard over. The rudder indicator appears to be accurate as I turn the wheel manually through both stbd and port.

Any other suggestions?
Also requested assistance at Raymarine a week ago. No response.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Raymarine autopilot ram not moving

You need to try to isolate where the problem is, computer, switching module or pump.

You could disconnect the pump from the switching module and use fused jumper cables to see if the pump will run freely both ways.

Then jumper the clutch solenoid and the pump and see whether the pump can pump the rudder both ways.

Nest thing would be to jumper a light bulb across the outputs from the switching module and see if the computer will keep it lit for more than 5 seconds.

Life gets a bit more difficult after that depending on whether the computer signals the switching module receives it's commands via a polarized two wire analog signal or over the nmea 2000 network.
