RADIO REGS IN UK; GERMANY AND USA
Hi all,
As part of my job, I'm trying to get our radio operators licenses here in Denmark updated. I need to get links to the exact requirements for VHF and HF licenses in the UK, USA and Germany.
Can any of you help? If you only can send a link for your own country - that's fine.
Thanks a lot

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Carsten,
I believe all the countries you have listed are subject to treaties that in effect say that once you meet the requirements for your home country then by definition you meet them for the foreign country. Just be sure you have the proper licenses from your home country that permit operation in international waters and you are automatically allowed to operate in any other treaty country.
In the US you need a ships license and an operator's license from the FCC before traveling outside US waters. There are no tests. You apply online and pay the fee. But foreigners are not allowed to apply so far as I know. When foreigners operate in the US they must have their license from their home country. Same applies if a US boat travels to a foreign country. By treaty the US license must be accepted.

Thank you.
It's not my own license. I work for the Danish Sailing Association and we are trying to get our Danish regulations updated. Just trying to get a handle on what other countries do.

Re: RADIO REGS IN UK; GERMANY AND USA
Hi Carsten
I have a GMDSS General License, issued at the time by the UK Dept for Trade and Industry, and subsequently endorsed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
So long as the ship/boat I am on has a valid Radio Station License, I can operate the equipment world wide.
At present I have a UK GMDSS license and operating radio equipment on a ship with a Ship Station License issued by Søfartsstyrelsen. You will know who they are, I could not even begin to pronounce it.

Hi Nigel - yes I do know how to pronounce søfartsstyrelsen. What are the exact requirement for getting a GOC or LRC in the UK?

So far as I am aware, you only need attend an approved training establishment, undertake the course (practical and theory), then sit and pass the examination (written and practical).
If you wait a minute I'll scan and attach the requirements as printed on my certificate.

Re: RADIO REGS IN UK; GERMANY AND USA
If you want to get the official US requirements you will have to wait until the politicians stop squabbling--the FCC website is shut down.

Re: RADIO REGS IN UK; GERMANY AND USA
For GOC as opposedto ROC, you would also need to provide documented proof of sea time (or so it would seem in the UK). Every 5 years my GOC needs to be re-validated by the MCA, which is done at the same time as my CoC is re-validated.
More info on the syllabus and exam is here
GOC

Re: RADIO REGS IN UK; GERMANY AND USA
Carsten, surely as the Danish licence is CEPT, its a fixed formal compatible with all other CEPT licenses. Hence you cant change the grades or formats.
What specifically is being looked at . I know there is some flexibility in CEPT as to exactly how you deliver the courses, but not much .

To accommodate this problem they are also known as "The Danish Maritime Authority" (shortened to DMA) internationally.
