Marine Vs Street Gps

I just bought a Garmin marine charts for US Alaska to USVI and their Homeport software - which all works as expected.

Not surprisingly Homeport software won't accept input from an external GPS receiver. I assume it's made to transfer the chart to a Garmin unit only.

My question is will the chart work on a Garmin street GPS? They are so much cheaper than a 'marine' GPS - which is ridiculous since they are essentially the same hardware.

Has anyone ever used a Garmin street GPS with marine charts?

Thanks,

Phil on S/V Solace

Phil,

They really aren't the same hardware. No one expects their car GPS to withstand weeks of sea spray and salt intrusion. Maybe at worst an errant soda.

Yep. Same doubt here - how well are car GPS secured from continuously flying spray?

Also, the marine market is minute compared with the car market, hence marine GPS will be more expensive.
