Re: Help: replace pedestal compass with MFD & more

Just a reminder to everybody….

When you are selecting and installing electronics around your helm station, pay attention to the specification for “compass safe distance”. This is the physical distance between the magnetic compass and and the electronic gear that you have to maintain to be sure that the electronics don’t introduce deviation that is variable and unpredictable.

Many MFD’s and other instruments have a 1 meter spec. It would kind of suck to have a compass heading that changed by 5 degrees as you changed the backlighting level on your display…

On many boats it’s an good option to cluster the electronics around the pedestal, and put a bulkhead style compass further away from the flowing electrons.

Re: Help: replace pedestal compass with MFD & more

Thanks for the compass tip. I didn't mention previously, but my cockpit does have a second compass that is attached to the cockpit bulkhead. In any case, I will inspect that second compass-make sure that it is illuminated, etc.
