Depth sounder screwy ...

While I was offshore in deep water my Moor Electronics sounder started showing 000.0. I figured the depth was just too great to get a good return signal. But since returning, the sounder has displayed other erroneous readings, sticking stubbornly at 90.1 in 15' of water and then switching to something like 87.3. I know the bottom is clean, so it's not that. I also know I could cheaply replace it, but the bevel hole is quite large (same as for old datamarine inits) and I don't want to have to re-engineer all that.

Any ideas how to fix the existing unit?

You may be SOL.
Moor Electronics closed its doors for good in November, 2015.

If you end up having to replace it, I can recommend staying away from the Maretron DST110. It often shows the wrong depth. It seems to default to 3.9' regardless of depth.
Customer service and warranty are terrible. i.e., they are not honouring their warranty. Just avoid Maretron.

Re: Depth sounder screwy ...

If it is the old Data marine threw hull, this is the way to fix it. Pull the sender and plug the hole temporarily. Your new sender now has to be reshaped to fit inside the old senders plastic case. the plastic case has the old sender inside of it and is then filled with epoxy. You can carefully drill out the old senders guts without hurting the outside case. put the new sender inside the old case and fill with epoxy. remove the plug and reinstall old senders case with new sender inside. works perfect and it still lets you pull the sender to clean it once in a while. mac

Re: Depth sounder screwy ...

When my inverter is running I get 32 feet no matter what the depth.
Try turning off stuff and see if it makes a difference.

Re: Depth sounder screwy ...

I don't know why one would go to DMI (Datamarine) for Maretron help?

Re: Depth sounder screwy ...

Probably don't have to say this, but if you put in any different unit make sure it will (always) be a water-tight fit. Almost is not close enough. If you put in a new unit (non-N2K) you will at least have to repull the data cable the full length as you shouldn't splice them. You could consider a inside-the-hull unit if you just don't want to cut a new hole and you have a suitable location. Some work to get it installed right but not that hard. Otherwise you will have to eventually reglass the old and put in a new one. Probably a new display too if you need one.

Re: Depth sounder screwy ...

In agreement with exMaggieDrum, As long as your not a cored hull, a shoot thru the hull transducer works extremely well and of course there is no hole in the boat
