Datamarine Knotmeter Display

Wondering if anyone has experience taking apart the display electronics for the Datamarine Knotmeter. The speed works fine but the display has become too faint to read. Suspect it is a contact issue/solder joint somewhere and would like to try a low-cost repair.

I know that the electronics are supposed to be held in place with a wire retaining ring around the back of the case. Have removed that successfully but can't slide the electronics out. Wondering if these is some other retaining device that I can't find.

Interested to know if anyone has any success in disassembling. Believe it is an S100KL

The latest project on my Ericson 30+.....

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Datamarine Knotmeter Display

1. At times there is a gasket material just under the face and it gets gooey over time holding the instrument 'glued' to the surface.

2. If the instrument is very old and the display is liquid crystal, it may become faint (low contrast) over years. Seen on collectable Casio watches. Nothing to be fixed then.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Datamarine Knotmeter Display

Thanks. Is there anything else mechanical holding it together besides the retaining ring? Any of the screws on the back of the unit used to retain it? I can imagine that the LCD display has gone bad but am thinking I may be able to replace that part if necessary. I've seen other equipment where the faintness gets better with reseating the part or resoldering but even if it needs to be replaced, guessing it wouldn't be too complicated.
