Raw Water Pump Typos

Why does this site apparently introduce a typo when the words r a w . w a t e r . p u m p are used.

Mostly it appears as water pump">raw water pump rather than water pump">raw water pump. I used to think it was isolated to my OS / browser combination but I see it other peoples posts also.

It seems to be intermittent???

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

OK, I've done some sleuthing and found these examples. These are only some examples, google custom search found thousands of similar examples on CF.

see OP http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...mp-188079.html

again in the OP http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ump-19178.html

and in the OP http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ump-19178.html

and http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ump-39145.html

see post #3 http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ump-39145.html

OP http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...an-144492.html

post #2 http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ump-69256.html

OP http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...mp-138671.html

OP http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...lem-16571.html

It seems (at first glance) that it only occurs once in each thread and only the first time the words are used. After that the words appear to be normal. So as it has occurred in the my OP in this thread, it won't occur again (I guess).

It only occurs in the main body of the post, never (AFAIK) in the title.

Many different posters and over a wide time interval (decades) so it isn't the writer making the same typo, it has to be something with the software (surely?).

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

I see nothing out out of the ordinary. I’m going to assume it’s from a search function, perhaps you searched for raw water pump and this is it finding it?

A64pilot, were you responding to post #3 or the post I subsequently deleted referring to Yanmar 3YM30AE with SD25 raw water flow issue - Cruisers & Sailing Forums.

If the latter, you are correct, it now appears normal yet when I first posted, it looked as water pump">raw water pump immediately after posting. Going back to it minutes later, it looked OK - weird!!!

Have you looked at any of the links given in post #3? If so, can you see the problem I'm referencing?

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

I looked at the links and saw nothing weird, but remember seeing what your describing back a few years ago when I was on the forum on a desktop. I almost exclusively use an IPad now, it just fits on the boat easier.
Anyway I would see that when I tried using the forum search feature, I figured it was sort of highlighting “hits”
Try searching for thru hull or something and see if it changes over to that

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

Indeed odd. I saw it in the links. Went to quote a post and bring it here and the quote looked normal. So it seems it is in the database correctly but being masked somehow in the display.

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

Well, just for grins I followed your links in Win 10 (Edge and Chrome) and iPad (Safari and Chrome) and in all cases I can confirm that the first mention in text appears as:

Quote:
water pump">raw water pump
I tried looking at the HTML source, it appears that the site inserts a lot of "view more discussions" tags (I hope it doesn't render this quote as HTML):

Quote:
The <a title="View more discussions on Raw&nbsp;water&nbsp;pump" class="sk_tag" href="http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/raw <a title=.html" View more discussions on Water" class="sk_tag" href="http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags.php?tag=water">water</a> pump">raw <a title="View more discussions on Water" class="sk_tag" href="http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/water.html">water</a> pump</a> on my <a title="View more discussions on Perkins" class="sk_tag" href="http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/perkins.html">Perkins</a> 4-108 is leaking. There is a steady drip from a small hole under the shaft. When I run the <a title="View more discussions on Engine" class="sk_tag" href="http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/tags/engine.html">engine</a> the drip is stronger, almost a stream. <br />
So it looks like there is probably a problem with the automatic parsing that is occurring and adding the tags. It seems that "raw", "water", and "pump" are all keywords that lead to tag creation and when you string the three of them together....

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

Thanks guys, this suggests I am not going crazy but it is certainly above my pay grade when it comes to understanding why.

FWIW, I am using Safari (11.1.2) on OS X (10.11.6).

Maybe it doesn't show on all platforms????

Re: Raw Water Pump Typos

I'm not seeing a problem using firefox.

Following the same link as Dsanduril I get the following ... captured as screen grabs so nothing reformats...

No problems, and the HTML is nice and clean.

[Edit] ... I can create the problem and get all that gunk in the HTML by turning on the user option "Auto link popular tags" ... so keep it turned off and the problem disappears.

Thanks for that, indeed, turning off "auto link popular tags" fixes things, didn't even know that setting was there.

For others, it's in the UserCP:Edit Options: then scroll way down the page.

Thanks guys. Likewise I can now toggle the problem on and off by toggling the "Auto link popular tags" in the Edit Options.

I guess this a work around rather than a proper fix but that is the way with software (isn't it?).

I'm going to miss seeing "water pump">raw water pump" every now and then
