That said, I prefer electricity. The lamp sits on the shelf, looking pretty. I far person has any health or safety concerns I'll be darned if I can figure why they burn a lamp at all.

I don't know. Lots of things at a few hundreds per million can do harm. On some of my cruises I have scientists measuring things in the parts per trillion because it makes a difference for them.

Different things have different levels of toxicity. I don't think it would be safe to assume we can breath fuel additives at any level without knowing for sure first.

I downloaded a brochure by Chevron that said that additives were in PPM.

I looked at many (not all are available on the internet) of the MSDS (Manufacturers Safety Data Sheets) for the additives, and in particular the two biocides, and none were carcinogenic. All were irritants. Inhalation in large quantities can cause chemical pneumonia. Also in large quantities there can be CNS reactions. These are exactly the same risks as the underlying fuel, which is of course considered toxic. Which is to say that the additives do not change the kind of toxicity, nor are they particularly more potent than the kerosene. But of course there is always toxicity with kerosene.

Frankly I have wasted enough time on this. If there are those who want to use jet fuel for their lamps/stoves then take a look at the MSDSs yourself. Start with wikipedia to get a list of additives and go from there. Personally I don't see the point, unless there is no other choice - in which case I would use it to get by until I could track down kerosene.

Thanks to CarinaPDX for a rational and referenced response to my query.

It seems that use in the quantities typical of yacht lamps there is nothing much to worry about from the additives.

Probably better to keep the stuff out of your martini, though.

Using mineral spirits in a lamp designed for kerosine (lamp oil) is a killer. It's amazing how people don't care about safety because many who know this still do it. Read the old thread that sarafina linked for more info.

Here's the warning against jet fuel:

Diesel and Aviation fuel should not be used in any wick lamp or lantern as the fumes from fuel additives can be FATAL if inhaled.

It's in the same thread. You go to jail when you smoke a cigarette but it's okay to burn nasty chemicals in lamps... go figure
