Kevlar and Roller Furling

We have just finished installing 2 Harken MKIV roller furlers, one for the jib and and another for the staysail.

Trying to look at all the options for sails, new and used.

In looking at used inventory at Bacon and Minnies I see a lot of Kevlar, Kevlar/Carbon, etc that will fit and are in very good shape. Having no experience with Kevlar I'm not even sure what questions to ask.

Are roller furlers and Kevlar compatible? ( I did a search and the thread I saw was from 2016 so I assume there are some updates/changes)

Are sun covers attached the same as traditional sails?

Is UV damage still an issue?

As always, thanks.

Re: Kevlar and Roller Furling

Yes, yes, and yes.

These will have most likely been built for racing. Longevity and resistance to flogging will not be great.

UV damage is generally the biggest issue on a cruising boat and UV covers would need to be replaced every three years in the tropics. For your location not so bad.

The racing laminates will likely not have been treated for mold and mildew, so may have issues when rolled up wet. Likely a really bad issue for your location.

The sails will not have been built for use partly furled and the load paths will not be designed for that. Are you prepared to use the full sail or nothing?
