Re: IMPOUND!
Yes, it's bad here. I've talked to 4 other cruisers here tonight and 3 have had to pay fines. One had his dinghy break loose and he had to pay a $150.00 impound fee plus an $80.00 towing fee plus another fee for his dinghy illegally parking it's self on a beach. Another had to pay an impound fee like us for paying their mooring fees a few hours late and the third had to pay a fine for staying too long on a dinghy dock. 15 minutes too long, by his account.
And people ask me if I'm afraid of pirates!

Re: IMPOUND!
I'll agree Newport is not a real friendly place. What is good about Newport is you can tie up for 15 bucks a night in the 8th richest community in the US. South of Santa Barbara you have 2 places to safely go on the hook so 15 a night is a pretty good deal. You can anchor in Dana Point as you continue south.

Re: IMPOUND!
I miss the days when the police were not so hardcore militant. So many of them wear army boots, paramilitary uniforms and have a very negative and suspicious attitude towards the public they are supposed to serve. I know there are also good cops without the attitude but they seem to be fewer in numbers.

Re: IMPOUND!
Ah, its good to know the spirit of Hazzard County is alive and well.
Boss Hogg tells Roscoe to get out there and raise some money so Roscoe hides the speed signs and stops everyone for going too fast. If they dont agree with the fine, him and Cletus bust a few tail lights just to make a point.
You have elections coming soon, use your vote to remind the public servants who pays their wages.

Some smart guy made a comment a few years ago during the crash.
The worlds biggest bank robberies have just been made by the banks themselves, aided and abetted by the governments. Whos going to stop them?

Steve...drop a letter to Latitude 38. They went after San Diego with type-writter guns blazing and put them up front and center in black and white. The Habor master was doing the moon walk in fast motion. Even in this thread they will get notice.
Bob...The story about the winch handle...that for real?

Sounds like folks trying to justify own jobs, and clearly they have SFA better to do - maybe start a campaign to cut costs?!

Re: Impound!
We really enjoyed our time in Newport while coming down south from Washington. It was nice to get a solid, protected mooring and at a low price in Southern Cal. The showers weren't too clean or convenient, but staying in this local at a low price was great for transients. Everyone gets a different experience - Sorry yours was a bad one on an expired mooring.

Re: Impound!
"drop a letter to"
And CC it to the businesses that you were planning to patronize. Odds are that they will also express their displeasure to the harbormaster, because no one wants to see customers driven away by petty nonsense. And as local business owners--the odds are, they also vote.

Yeah... all the Teamster cops and fire guys are whining because govt wants to lay a few off with the budget crunch.... "oh it'll be the end of the world". Yet, I have seen as many as 5 cop cars at a minor accident etc... se this all the time...

That's b/c they have nothing better to do, they're bore to death. So they all show up for the party looking for some action. Just too many legalist! What ever happen to grace (judgement calls).
Last fall, I got pulled over coming back from a Nephews funeral. I explained to the officer I was a bit in a daze but he said his supervisor said every pull over required a ticket, just b/c it was a holiday weekend (Columbus day).

$15 plus a couple of hundred in fines, is not so good a deal.
