Dr Jeff Masters (Weather Underground) said Winston's estimated winds over Koro Island, Fiji, were equal to the estimated winds at landfall of the infamous Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys and stronger than Hurricane Camille's winds at landfall in 1969

Re: FIJI takes a hit!

I wonder how Koro Island faired. I know a lot of expats homestead there. Also if I'm not mistaken, boats are put on the hard via backhoe which digs a trench and the boats keel is placed in it. I'm curious if that was effective in this storm. I'm saddened for the loss of the 6 individuals. It could have been worst.

Easter actually, so about a month away still. Hoping to get down to Cns for a week and then come back up. I always keep an eye on the Wx when doing that crossing. Fortunately the BOM is pretty good at 3-4 day forecasts for up here and if it doesn't look good we postpone.

Bummer. We're you on a mooring? Any known damage to your boast?

Sorry to hear about your boat. I hope the damage isn't too bad. Any news on how others in Savusavu made out?

I'm hoping that Jolene and Sami at Waitui Marina, Curly, and Jim & Meri on Hotspur made it through without significant damage.

Funny how people love to flaunt their deep ignorance in public by not knowing the difference between climate and weather.

Re: FIJI takes a hit!

Thought I'd share some photos of other yachts that hit the bricks on Savusavu that a friend on the island sent me.
There were twenty two in all. A salvor is en route from Suva I believe, to help pull all of them back in to the water.
