How effectively can someone instruct another when sailing on separate boats?

Depends on how well they can pay attention and listen.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

First impression was I will take things that didn't happen for 100 Alex. But good read so far with corroborating sources facebook, multiple posters with no post history and a crew listing i am starting to think there might be some truth in this story

On a serious note, Do you have a carbon monoxide detector on your boat? Have you checked the batteries?

Yeah, but it is pot. One of the first murders I ever worked (!986) was a pothead who ran out of pot, and killed a guy to get more. He didn't have any money, but he told the dealer he did, and when he met him out in the country, he killed him.

Later, he felt bad about it, and showed up where he had put the body.

But, I know today, pot's different. It now cures every woe known to man.

I'll still vote for Nicole Kidman to play one of the roles.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

The following post was made by a new member called Gandoka. Rather than create another thread on this debacle, I have copied it to this thread.

For Gandoka, your original post was in the Emergencies and Disasters forum. However, the problem isn't really either an emergency or a disaster is it?

Hello everyone! Due to circumstances beyond our control, our boat has been under the care of the Cuban Naval Base located in Puerto Vita, Guardalavaca for almost a year. My partner Bill Pearson, has gone to the island to repair the boat and continue the interrupted voyage towards Costa Rica. We have discovered, upon inspecting the vessel, now moored at the nearby Marina Gaviota, that while in the fine care of Cuban authorities, some items have been "lost". All of our fenders are gone ( 4 out of five ) together with hundreds of feet of chain rope and windlass chain. So, without being able to throw a hook, the boat is pretty much stranded. OUR REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE: Would anybody currently within access to chain and rope be so kind to bring what we need to the boatīs, and Billīs location? (Im reaching out from Costa Rica) If so, PLEASE contact me ASAP to luisadrian@muebleamerica.com or gandoka69@gmail.com my phone / WhatsApp number, dialing from the US: 011+506 87296604 so we may coordinate payment (paypal) to the good samaritan that might help us. We thank you in advance!

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

Interesting, so he made it to Cuba after all.
While it's far from ideal, I'd think temporarily 50ft of chain and rode should be enough to not be "stranded"...
Old car tires make great temporary fenders...

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

^^^^^Franzisca is right, and probably easily found at a dump, which Cuba probably has.

I don't know about sourcing chain or line there, but they probably have both, maybe just not made up together. The chain is needed for disembarking cargo. And rope has many uses.

Just to have a way to anchor on arrival in Costa Rica, I'd say aniy old chain and line could be made to work. Even if you have to have an anchor watch.

The big deal is to not allow oneself to get too excited.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

Given that it's a straight shot to Costa Rica, I'd take my chances sailing there, tying up with halyard ends to the first wharf I found, and buying some line at the nearest hardware store.
Cuba will have clothesline at best--those who haven't been there can't imagine the scarcity of nearly everything.
