Re: Commandeered to Cuba

^^Thanks for posting that. I knew there was another side. Sadly it would take a full inquiry of both guys to get the story straight, and still there'd be two versions, and questions unanswered, and perhaps plenty of blame for each of them.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

Oh yeah totally believable cuz of course it straight from FB. Somewhere between the boozer and the dopehead lies the fog of truth .

I'm sure the Cubans are wondering how to get this nutjob off their island if true.

That was probably their primary consideration...get the nuts off our island. We have better ways to spend out time.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

The FB perspective fills in a lot of blanks.

Still a strange story...with more than a few red flags.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

Thank you for, once again, reminding me why I'm not on Facebook!

Also, thanks for posting the "other side of the story." I knew there must be one, and now that I've had a chance to at least skim it, I feel like there's some closure. I'm not even sure why I started following this in the first place. Like a wreck on the highway, I couldn't turn away.

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

Having read both versions of the epic, seems that the only folks who behaved well are the Cubans! Imagine what would have happened if these guys venture had ended in, say, California and they were not US citizens...

Strange things happen at sea...

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

I wonder if the dumpster diving doper informed the Trump-addled skipper he was bringing contraband on board?

Re: Commandeered to Cuba

This explanation does make more sense, and fits with the OP's tale as well. I would be reluctant to buy off on the idea that this is a black and white story however. Anyone who takes pot on an international voyage that is in an area closely watched by the USCG is a fool, and certainly not someone a skipper would want to risk losing his boat for.

One takeaway is what I have come to believe: experienced skippers should be very reluctant to "help" owners that clearly don't measure up. Too often once underway the "I'm the captain!" nonsense appears, and in truth they are and you are stuck with going along (and risking your life) or taking control (and risking a physical response or a legal problem). This incident is far from the first time I have heard of, and even experienced, such problems. So often these days "captains" have next to no experience, and that should scare you. If you don't have confidence in the skipper's abilities then don't go with them, no matter how much fun it seems. And just because he promises to defer to your judgement before departure don't count on that actually happening. Hard lessons...

"I offered him a nug, several times, but he only glared at me, seething...."

This is a Barbara Cartland novel, isn't it?
Someone help me out: What's a 'nug'?

I guess you don't know how to use a search box?

From the Urban Dictionary: "A high quality bud of marijuana."

Otherwise I wouldn't have known :-)
