Re: Boats with extensive owner performed refits?

The Downeast 38 sails pretty well IMO considering it’s a heavy full keel design. But don’t expect to point too high or go very fast in lght air. She seemed stoutly built to me. One thing I would do if I were to own one is to install a VERY beefy lower fitting for the bobstay, one that would also hold the strain of a snubber on the chain fitted there. Without that the chain coming down off the sprit can be pulled to lean against the bobstay and/or dolphin striker in a wind shift. The boat I sailed had that and I was glad it did. Off hand I can’t think of anything else I’d change. She does pretty well in big wind and big waves. I actually launched her off a wave on a beam reach once. I was shocked how much of a heavy hull could come out of the water! Oh yeah, that’s right, one other thing you may want to add are thick sheets of Lexan to slide in over the big port lights when concerned about their integrity in heavy weather.

I liked it. The cabin didn’t smell funny either which is a rarity.

It is huge inside. Has a diesel heater with separate tank.

He didn’t add those winch stands. Says he had tested them though lol

I did not see any cracking at the deck etc around them.

Well… maybe check that Krogen 38 out.

The broker seems to reaaaaly not want to show it lol

I’ve emailed once and left 2 voicemails since last Wednesday asking for a call back to set up a viewing. This morning a secretary patched me through to a cell phone… that got answered, but the guy had me call the office back and ask for another salesman… went to VM (go figure). That was about 10:00am… no return call all day again.
