Of course the answer will depend on where you're considering doing this. Some places theft would be more a possibility than others. Some places have big tides and current swings. Some places have better holding than others. Personally, i think that is too long to leave a boat unattended out in the open, if you care if it will still be there, and in what condition.

Depending the location more information would influence our responses.
Where were you planning this or is that what you are asking?

Well, since you're not giving any info about where-pick a place with good holding, no bad weather, and no thieves.

Honestly, nobody can answer this question without more info.

Only way remotely would I consider would be if I had someone looking after it at least twice a day minimum.

I will bite, and suggest Tambobo Bay on Negros island, Philippines.
Safe from all winds, good holding, nice people all round, and only very rare typhoons.

Typical of too many questions posed on sailing forums... no background... These sorts questions are a waste of time and should be removed and considered spam.

It's more than fine to ask a question in a forum which contains so much collective wisdom as this one. But answers are informed by the circumstances. Without that the answers would be as meaningless as the question is.

Paul,

What part of a request for more info do you not understand? It is unanswerable in its present conformation.

What good is an alarm going to do if you are miles and miles away? Run down your batteries is what.

Personally, I would never even consider what you are asking. However, if I had to do it, I'd make sure I had the biggest anchor money could buy and I'd set it all the way to China. Why not invest a few bucks on a proper mooring? By your comment, 2 weeks a month, it sounds a semi-permanent situation anyway.

Re: Any thoughts on leaving a 40' sail boat on the hook 2 weeks a month

I have left my boat unattended at anchor in the past in small communities where I know a number of people in the surrounding shore side homes or at nearby docks. I have also had friends leave their boats and travelling on a "land cruise" near a dock where I was located. As others have said, it's best where "you" know the community and the people, not where "we" know the community and people.
