Is this boat to good to be true?

Hi everyone, first post here. I am a beginner sailor, maybe not even a pollywog. But like you all was drawn to sailing and have daydreamed about owning one all my life and taking it around the Caribbean at first. So I am constantly looking around at what is on the internet, particularly in Aluminum and Steel sailboats..... and I found this and it really just seems like they priced it wrong. Don't get me wrong I am not planning on buying this boat as my first sailboat, even though I would really like to and could and could be spontaneous enough to do it which might be bad. I wish i had more experience sailing under my belt so I could sail it back to Florida from Greece, as this Aldebaran 60 ft ketch is flipping gorgeous to me and seems to be a half million dollar steel sailboat that is pretty new 2009 and a blue water cruiser, high storage, gen, ac, watermaker..etc I have been reading about duty tax of 1.5% for sailbaots in USA, thats only 1500 which is not alot since its listed at 105k.. please look at this link of it from yachtworld... something seems to good to be true... If one of you purcahses it please let me sail on it with you

A steel boat with timber decks. There could be huge problems lurking under there.

Welcome to the forum...maybe if you are a pollywog, start at the beginning of an adventure rather than the end. There is fun in the adventure of getting there. Take some sailing lessons, then consider what type of sailing you want to do.

We have no idea what evil lurks in that boat.

It might as well be a free Ferrari on the moon.

How many forests were cut down to make that deck?

Re: Is this boat to good to be true?

The price is probably quoted right, as it's been on sale for 150000 eur previously (and that was a "heavily reduced" price already). It's been on charter earlier. Considering the price, I'd also guess there are some big problems that are not disclosed in the sales ad. From the pics it sure looks nice and fitting it out has cost a lot. Somebody is taking a big financial hit selling this.

I agree it looks tempting, but there must be undisclosed reasons for the low asking price. The photos appear to be from 2012 and before.

The price is probably for a tenth share. I've seen several ads like this. I'll be in Gouvia marina May 5. If it's still there, I'll give you some feedback. 58 tonnes of boat will chew up a load of diesel to go anywhere.

Pictures are 5yrs old. That should tell you something right off the bat.

Ton's of exterior wood not maintained will by itself lead to a huge bill to bring it back to good shape and odds are there are hidden problems.

At this stage in your learning curve, I could see no good coming from even considering this boat. Far too many pitfalls.

Many photos from 2009. I find it unethical to post 8 year old photos on a for sale ad. But granted, they looked sweet...

Re: Is this boat to good to be true?

It's waaaay too good to be true. Either it has fallen into disrepair since the photos were taken, or it's for a share, or the boat was built on a languishing older steel hull (note that it says "finished" not "built" in 2009) that is now manifesting a lot of problems.

Managing a maintaining boat like that is a full time job and will cost you a fortune. It's not the droid you're looking for, even if it is a steal.

Re: Is this boat to good to be true?

I messaged the broker. He said it's a suggested price and they will sell it to the highest bidder. There is also videos of it on YouTube but they are also 8 years old. So no idea what the condition of it is now. Steel and wood both can go bad that long if not taken care of.

Re: Is this boat to good to be true?

I'm not surprised by the low price. It looks like a boat for a niche market. Lots of people are not so much into wood and its upkeep these days. Beautiful boat. Will need an independent survey (don't let the seller suggest one). If I were looking to buy the boat, I would fly over and take a look for myself. See the Parthenon while you are there to help justify the plane ticket.
