7 years of cost data
Sorry this did not come out earlier -- attached is a spreadsheet of our costs for 7 years -- every penny spent is here be it flights home, a cup of coffee, a pen, taking relatives out to eat or buy them food when we are in the USA. Nothing was skipped - nothing.

Re: 7 years of cost data
Awesome, but questionable on . The dockage and transportation seemed to be the variables that were out of a typical cruising life on the road, this precipitated by medical problems and expenses. Insurance also. So, I wonder what would have been you costs if things were more frugal.
I assume this is your 40 DS

Thank you for sharing.
What is "customs" costs?
Is it for paying custom duty on stuff you imported wherever you were or were you charged for something when entering countries?

Re: 7 years of cost data
Personally I think if sailing is a thing of passion for you it's better to be ignorant about what it costs you. Have fun and as long as you stay out of debt keep enjoying it in a carefree manor 😜

Nothing to do with planning. If the money is spent, you've had fun, you are financially ok, why find out how much you spent to dampen you enjoyment and question your ownership

Re: 7 years of cost data
Thanks for sharing, a lot of people are looking for info like this.
If I may make a suggestion? Add what type of boat and how many crew members these numbers are for.
Numbers obviously vary from boat to boat, but generally speaking just knowing if we're talking about 2 adults on a basic 32' boat or a family of 4 on a 45' boat with a lot of "gadgets" can help people interpret the number better.

SaltMonkey - most of the dockage is our winter time but also when we put our boat in for inland travel. We really do not like leaving the boat on the hook and leave her for a few days or week or more.
Medical is we do not have insurance. we tired more than once to get it but at 70y/o the answer is nice to meet you but no. So in Tunisia I had shoulder surgery in late 2014 and had to go through pt to get it working. The Admiral had hand surgery in Tunisia and again had pt. I also got pneumonia in Romania so we had to overstay in Sarande Albania and get it cured there.
The insurance is for our boat and what IMIS charges. They work hard with us to make sure we get covered for places we go that may be out of the ordinary.

SM6WET -- yes customs I what it costs us in and out. We did a bit of inland travel and there is some of that in there also. Mostly it is free but sometimes!
But free does not extend to the boat.

Lizzy Belle -- we sail a Jeanneau DS40 that was built in 2001 and launched in 2003. We bought her new and we do have her pimped out and full functional with all the bells and whistles. There are only 2 of us as we do not take crew - tried it twice and it was a miserable experience, never again - we do spend a bit to keep her in great shape (wait till you see our 2016 expenses as we just did a big haul our and rehap of a few systems) - We also travel inland when we can.

Really, you had to pay customs for coming in and out in some countries?
Can you list those countries? I have always been under the impression such should always be free.
Cheers,

it is a combination of things. In Tunisia we had buy an exit stamp to leave by air and sea(I think but can't remember), we over stayed our visa and paid a fine (cheaper than leaving for a day then coming back in), in Albania you check in and out of every port and have to use an agent and we did 4 ports, in Greece we had to buy a transit log, in Turkey we had to buy a transit log and then we applied for and got residence.
hope that helps
