DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

Dangerous creatures found in water
Some of the deadliest wildlife on the planet make the oceans and wetlands their home. And beware: these creatures range from the downright vicious, to the seriously venomous.
Sea snake:
Adapted to a fully aquatic life and unable to move on land, sea snakes are highly venomous. The most poisonous species is the beaked sea snake, whose venom is eight times as toxic as a cobra's.

Re: DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

I didn’t open all the links, but on the one I did read through, no sharks got got a mention despite a steady human death toll in Australian waters ....and the garfish (all types) were also conspicuously absent, a lot of people have died as a result of penetrating wounds from airborne gars and long toms either while fishing with bright lights or scooting along in fast boats and tenders. Irukanji are another tiny sneaky and occasionally lethal critter in the far north waters of Aus.

FWIW: The third link, ‘Animals Around The Globe’*, site lists the Great White Shark #5, & Tiger Shark #8, and their [linked] article, “10 Deadly Australian Animals”, also lists the Shark #4. [specifically the Great White, Tiger, & Bull Sharks].
* https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.co...arine-animals/
The fourth link, ‘ScubaDotCom’*, site lists the Irukandji Jellyfish #10.

Yes. Fortunately a lot of my foot is heavily callused. Lots of hours running kata on bare floors lol

However, while exiting a dive site in Bonaire 3 or 4 years ago I got one in the TOP of my foot. That bloody hurt, I can tell you!

Re: DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

Jim once got a bunch of sea urchin spines in his hand. Turns out, water as hot as he could stand, soaking the hand therein, and the spines dissolved. Very painful.

The white an black banded sea snakes are highly venomous, but their delivery system is very far back in their mouths, such that they'd have to bite you on your toe, or finger tip; and they are not aggressive. Tiger sharks are highly territorial. Bull sharks here in Oz get people who swim in canal housing developments. Crocs, box jellies, irukandji, lots of baddies.

Curious why jet skiers are not on the list.

Sharks and a steady death toll attributed to them? That is just myth.
Do you know how many sharks are slaughtered by humans on a daily basis? Sharks do not target people as prey.

I spent a night in an anchorage on the north coast of Sumbawa a month or so ago. The boat was surrounded by sea snakes at night. They were circling the boat, attaracted by the lights I am told. They trail the fishing boats and pick up the scraps. They are not aggressive but can be curious and approach people in the water. Their mouths are tiny so being bitten by one is highly unlikely. If you are*that unlucky you are a goner.

Re: DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

I’ve still never seen a shark in the wild! Ha ha.

Been from Venezuela to Nova Scotia and everywhere in between by boat. Diving in Bonaire.

Nothing. Not complaining though.

Have seen lots and lots of whales, tons of gators. Had to dodge a sea snake barefoot in Florida surf.

No sharks.

Correct about the mosquito being the deadliest

Re: DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

Humans run second to mosquitoes.
I have seen plenty of sharks in the water. As said, they have a lot more to fear from us than us from them.
Crocs are downright scary. They will target humans. Ditto for Komodo dragons.

Re: DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

Well, here in Oz we just had another shark attack, thankfully non fatal. I was at Byron bay when a white shark attacked and ate a scuba diver at Julian rocks and a colleague of mine was taken by a shark while surfing off lighthouse beach Ballina, body never recovered.
Worth mentioning are deaths from box jellyfish stings… we don’t seem to have deaths in Oz but Malaysia and Thailand have had a few …though they under report the incidents. We had 3 seperate non lethal stingings in Langkawi and 2 seperate fatalities at Pantai Cenang. No signs: no nets.

Re: DANGEROUS MARINE CREATURES

Yeah. I’m from the Northern Rivers and we have had our fair share of problems over time. Shark attacks are very rare considering the number of sharks in the water and the amount of people swimming/surfing/diving.
I have seen a lot of them around Lennox and Byron. They are always there(in the ocean). It’s their place and it’s up to us to avoid being mistaken for a meal. I have not seen many here in Indo. A few reefies when snorkelling but almost none! I reckon they are mostly fished out.
As said, they should be very scared of us and stay away.
