Australia rescues sick expedition member from remote Antarctic outpost in the depths of winter

A sick expedition member has been evacuated from a remote Antarctic outpost in the depths of winter following a rescue operation spanning thousands of kilometers, Australian authorities said Monday.

In a statement, the Australian Antarctic Division said the icebreaking ship RSV Nuyina had sailed more than 3,000 kilometers [1,620 nautical miles] from Hobart in Tasmania to the Casey Research Station in the east Antarctic to attend to the unnamed patient.

Wow - that's pretty remarkable.

Coincidently I recently read "Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole" about someone who developed cancer at the South Pole station.
