I believe that was because of the heliport being on the river and getting a bunch of use by foreign diplomats. I don't agree with it but it is what it is. We bought into it 70 or so years ago.

Re: They Are Closing the Waters to Everyone!

I say again.... this is SOP for any president anywhere. And it has been forever.
In my personal memory and experience it is standard policy and procedure dating back to the '60's and was done for JFK and Richard Nixon who both had Florida residences.
Anyone seeking to make a political diatribe about it is not talking about boats or anything to do with cruising.
It's a non event.

Re: They Are Closing the Waters to Everyone!

Why do people often seem to want to trouble the mods to close threads when at least one of those mods has already (and quite politely) asked everyone to keep politics out of the discussion? The amount of presidential security that is necessary may be a fair topic for a policy debate (in a different forum ) but it hardly seems political.

People
I have just spent an hour of my life removing posts for political commentary and bad language.

Time to observe the rules or the thread goes...

Icant believe read the whole thing.
Of course the most exciting thing here in demopolis was the police escort for our trimaranlaunch.
The politicians no longer travelby barge, shame.
Other than that much adieau about nothing, as usual.
Havent heard much about the "closure" of ghe dismal swamp ? That could lead to some interesting comments imo

Then please remove #86, too, because the next to last paragraph is simply wrong. Thanks.

Re: They Are Closing the Waters to Everyone!

We went by the safety zone yesterday on our way north from Delray Beach. There were two inflatable Coast Guard boats, with two people and one in three people on the other, Each was armed with deck mounted automatic weapons.

One armed Coast Guard vessel approached us, wave briefly, and requested that we continue on and our present speed until we were out of the area. Seems fair enough.

We requested and they permitted that we take photographs.

We posted the photographs on Facebook but honestly have no idea how to post here. They were interesting, just like the regular inflated boats the Coast Guard drives around everywhere. Except, instead of at the gunmount so the bow they were fitter with big guns that were presumably automatic weapons.

They were impressive, somewhat threatening, however the guards were polite and doing their job.

I don't think the motivation was political. Presidents have always been protected wherever they decide to live.

Last week we went by the same location on the road. We stopped walked over to the gate took some photographs and were asked, forcefully, to leave.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Trump, Clinton, Obama or any other previous or future particular name. It does have to do with the fact that politicians and their personal needs/wants take precedence over the lives and needs of ordinary American citizens. And that fact affects us as boaters, cruisers and citizens. And if you think that this is "just temporary" or due to some real or imaginary immediate threats you are not very logical or informed. Today its "only" 1000 feet and only here and there, tomorrow it will be 10 miles and for months or years at a time. And the day after tomorrow the same politicians will decide that owning a vessel in general is very dangerous the their safety and has to be curtailed. It is a slippery slope which needs to be fought against now and not when it will be too late. Just like the personal income tax needed to be fought in 1913 in its infancy and not 100 years later when it became an all consuming and unbeatable monster. Because today the question is not if that monster is to be in our lives but which child is to be sacrificed to it. Same with these VIP's related closures and shutdowns.

IMO the long term solution to the problem of a VIP's (any VIP) residence being too close to the public ROW is not to shut down that ROW when the VIP is home but to sell that residence and buy one where public traffic would not affect the owner. Or just be a big boy/girl and suck it up, threat chances and all. After all us regular folks somehow manage these threats and take chances of being a victim of violence everyday. Perhaps when politicians will feel similarly they will direct their policies toward alleviating these threats for all of us and not just for them or their families.
Island Time, on this point set, we do largely agree. I don't necessarily agree in specific to every point, but I DO agree that your comments in this post are most DEFINITELY valid and bear additional consideration by people who otherwise simply close down and don't consider implications of today's rules against where they may go. To that end, however, I suggest that it would perhaps be a good idea to watch and see what the rule is today, and if it changes materially as we continue watching it, we should raise bloody heck directly with those attempting to foist it upon us. We do agree in principle on these things, though, even if I am not at the same level of "NO MORE!" yet as you seem to perhaps be (and that position for you is not one I see as bad, I am just not there yet-but close!).

Presidents can truly be inconvenient at times. However, the alternatives are far worse. Spare me from unelected philosopher kings.
