THEY are an outfit called "The United States Secret Service". Been around quite aWhile. As pilots, we deal with TFRs, or Temporary Flight Restrictions. Not defending punk politicians with this, just saying. You asked who THEY are; that's who. Very cold-blooded group when THEY're on the job.

2.5 Miles is not 1/2 the Florida coastline.... If you go plot the notice to mariners from North Tip of Everglades Islands to 1000 ft South of Southern Blvd Bridge (Bingham Islands St MM 1025) that's all it is...

The max width of the Zone 1 (exclusion zone) is less than 1/2 mile, and too shallow for your average cruising boat anyway.

Take a deep breath kids...

This isn't a political discussion, despite the trolling. This is about free navigation on public waters.

How about keeping boats 50 yards from shore or some reasonable distance?

And comparing the shut down of a roadway for a few hours is absolutely not comparable to the closure of waterways for weeks. I worked in DC for many years! I know the drill.
Last xmas I was in green cay marina in st Croix and Jo Biden was visiting close by. The marina was encamped with special forces guys special ribs etc but no blockages for boating to and fro the rest of the usvl

Re: They Are Closing the Waters to Everyone!

When Obama would visit Hawaii they would shut down entire beaches. When any Prez would visit St Louis (used to live there) they would shut down MULTIPLE highways. Not just one, that would let everyone know the route being taken. They would shut down several even in rush hour traffic. Anyone remember Clinton shutting down an airport so he could get a haircut on the runway?
It ain't anything new, it ain't just Trump. It is the way it is regardless of party. It ain't even the prez, it is the secret service that makes these decisions.
Seriously, blaming Trump? Obama is still Prez. Trump has no authority yet. Awfully long reaches here trying to point fingers.

If I was them I would ground the Marines too. Marines are Patriots. I will say no more.

They've been doing this in Hawai'i for 8 years now. We keep a yacht here on O'ahu and vacation several months a year.. Security has interfered with our land and sea plans at times. Welcome to reality.

Re: They Are Closing the Waters to Everyone!

I keep seeing that the same folks who are connecting general criticism of shut downs of whole areas when a President is around (any President, as far as I present my own criticism of this practice) with political sour grapes. Then the same folks are protesting that others, not they, are introducing politics into CF.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Trump, Clinton, Obama or any other previous or future particular name. It does have to do with the fact that politicians and their personal needs/wants take precedence over the lives and needs of ordinary American citizens. And that fact affects us as boaters, cruisers and citizens. And if you think that this is "just temporary" or due to some real or imaginary immediate threats you are not very logical or informed. Today its "only" 1000 feet and only here and there, tomorrow it will be 10 miles and for months or years at a time. And the day after tomorrow the same politicians will decide that owning a vessel in general is very dangerous the their safety and has to be curtailed. It is a slippery slope which needs to be fought against now and not when it will be too late. Just like the personal income tax needed to be fought in 1913 in its infancy and not 100 years later when it became an all consuming and unbeatable monster. Because today the question is not if that monster is to be in our lives but which child is to be sacrificed to it. Same with these VIP's related closures and shutdowns.

IMO the long term solution to the problem of a VIP's (any VIP) residence being too close to the public ROW is not to shut down that ROW when the VIP is home but to sell that residence and buy one where public traffic would not affect the owner. Or just be a big boy/girl and suck it up, threat chances and all. After all us regular folks somehow manage these threats and take chances of being a victim of violence everyday. Perhaps when politicians will feel similarly they will direct their policies toward alleviating these threats for all of us and not just for them or their families.

Dear Pannickers, if you read the CG rules you will see you can transit the ICW -just cannot stop or slow way down--so have a nice trip!

Re: They Are Closing the Waters to Everyone!

Great info! Now I know to time my trip just like I had to coming down the East River due to the United Nations meeting in NYC. Wish I had known that I could have just started a CF whine feast instead.

Maybe the president elect could issue portable crying sacks for those emotionally afflicted by all this.

Zone 2: All vessels transiting the second zone shall maintain a steady speed and shall not slow or stop from waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon including the Intracoastal Waterway from the southern tip of the Everglades Island in the north to approximately 1000 yards from the south of the bridge on the south and from the western shore line to the western edge of the Fisherman Island in the east.
Zone 3: All vessels transiting the third zone shall maintain a steady speed and shall not slow or stop from waters of the Atlantic Ocean from Banyan Road in the north to Ocean View Road in the south and from shore to approximately 1000 yards east of the shoreline.

From the same USCG Release:

Any vessels that would like to travel through the security zones must contact the Coast Guard via marine-band radio via VHF-FM channel 16. Violators of the zones could face a civil penalty of more than $88,000; a criminal penalty up to $10,000; or up to 12 years in prison.
