What type of anchor do you use?

I've been reading up on anchors and was wondering what every one else uses and why? have used fluke type anchors in the past, boat is a 26' cat with a decent sized locker with anchor roller. but boat is bigger so I need a new anchor. Just trying to decide if I should stay with a fluke style and should I continue to keep it in the anchor locker or leave it on the roller.

Not interested in what brand anchor you use, more interested in what style....fluke, Bruce or plow. What length boat do you have and what bottom types do you anchor in most frequently?

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

Where do you primarily anchor? Is the bottom mud. sand, rock? Is there lots of grass, kelp, etc?

Rode is another factor that needs to be considered.

Most anchorages here in Maine are mud and we use none of the above. Our new gen anchor is most closely related to a plow but not really a plow. We own a CQR(getting retired), Fortress(lunch hook), Manson Supreme(primary), Mantus(storm) and a Bruce(getting retired). All depends on condition and primary use.

FYI, Bruce is a brand of anchor. The type would be considered a claw.

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

Not sure what you mean by "fluke" anchor. I'm guessing a Danforth or Fortress, both of which are excellent but not good unless direction of pull stays the same. Brand is very important, as two anchors of the same "style," like two different plows, often behave very differently. I used a Bulwagga 45-lb for many years and it was excellent. Bit quickly, always held, high holding power. I now have a Mantus 45-lb but I have not had enough time to evaluate it yet. Boat is 38-foot motorsailor ketch, high windage, heavy. I also carry two Fortress FX-23 anchors for secondary use and/or additional holding power in bad conditions.

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

We are useing a 75 lb Danforth on a 51 ft Motorsailor. It's enough if ya set it right. The only reason we have not changed to a New Style anchor is the anchor is launched from a starboard side hawse hole, with a stright drop and the danforth shaft fits snugly in the hole ! We are presently looking for a new style anchor that might fit up the hole and have a chance of going into the hole in the right direction with out haveing to do a bunch of hanging over the side ! Ive used danforths for years, and had little trouble, but anyone can see the agvantage of haveing a new style anchor, any of them is better then what I have but if it wont work on my boat Im sorta stuck with the old one !! better to go Manson, or Mantus ect . just my 2 cents

Um, why is "The Anchor Guy" posting this kind of question? Maybe to stir up discussion on a particular type of anchor? Just wondering....

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

anchor guy,
On a 26' boat, keeping the anchor on the bow roller or in a foredeck locker is a matter of personal choice. Whichever anchor type you choose, it will be light enough for you to carry it with one hand.

Personally, I prefer to keep my bower anchor in the locker: this reduces the pitching moment of inertia, reduces the risk of damaging something in a failed maneuver, reduces the risk of having this beautiful anchor stolen... Since I don't have an electrical windlass with remote control, I have to go to the bow anyway for anchoring.

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

We use claw type, plow type and flat type and one foldable type that I would define as a grapnel type.

Our boat is 25+ feet long and we most often anchor in sand, coral, mud, clay, pebbles and rock. We avoid grass and other weeds as much as we know they are there.

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

I assume he's not interested in name brands, but "styles," because he sells various non-name brand anchors on his site.

Re: What type of anchor do you use?

I use a 60" Manson Supreme plow type anchor with lots of surface area on my 43.5' fairly light boat. And I leave it on my bow all the time as I don't care about anything other that it holds!
