Rocna roll bar

Has anyone removed the roll bar? I have never seen it do any good and have seen it do bad several times. I am about to get a re-galvanize job.

Not a fan of roll bar anchors myself, but without the roll bar on the Rocna there wouldn't be anything to keep it from dragging on its back. Sounds like not a great idea....

Re: Rocna roll bar

Except, we most often anchor in clear water and it always lands right side down. I think the roll bar is a marketing gimmick. Or maybe for a 1:100 chance of it landing upside down.

How about a reset on a wind or tide change? May cause the anchor to flip in the middle of the night.

Re: Rocna roll bar

Removing the roll bar would not be a good idea. The roll bar orientates the anchor in the correct setting position.

There was someone on another forum who removed the rollbar from their Manson Supreme. Predictably, it did not work.

The anchor companies would love to get rid of the roll bar, as it prevents the anchor fitting on many boats and therefore reduces potential sales. Unfortunately, without a roll bar, a heavy and bulky ballast chamber is needed to reliably orientate the anchor.

Or you could just buy a Sarca Excell, no roll bar there at all.

You could get a Vulcan or a Spade. They are designed without the "roll bar."

Re: Rocna roll bar

It is more common to see people try to add roll bars to anchors that were not made with one in the first place. Unfortunately, this is just as misguided. At the very least, the bulky toe also needs to be removed, but by then you may as well have started from scratch.

This is just one example where the owner of this convex plow anchor has welded on a roll bar to try and improve the performance:

Re: Rocna roll bar

I get it with the Mantus, it's very wide and needs help. The Rocna shank is not that much different from a Delta etc, it just has wider flukes. Why would a roll bar right an anchor? You are not not pulling it sideways. The angles in the shank are such that it has tendency to pull the leading edge down, not up anyway.
We have a Canadian Rocna (25kg, ser #125), and it never lands upside down.

Re: Rocna roll bar

Look at the videos of anchors setting that are posted elsewhere on CF.

The "roll bar" contributes to the anchor resetting after a change in the direction of pull, particularly in some types of bottom conditions.

Minus the humongous problem of one filling with grass and mud and becoming useless.

Re: Rocna roll bar

I've tested a lot of anchors. If you are careless setting (for example, still moving forward at even a tiny fraction of a knot) it is absolutely possible to flip a Rocna/Mantu/Manson over backwards while setting. I've had it happen with Mantus. I've had Rocna anchors roll over backwards and stay stable on their backs in very soft mud (rare, but happens).

Once I neglected to powerset (lunch stop). I noticed it while swimming. On it's back (roll bar removed--long story).

Anchor enough times and it WILL get on it's back. Believe it or don't.

Re: Rocna roll bar

When I first bought my Mantus I had a conversation with Greg at Mantus about removing the roll bar for use in my home waters, sand/mud in Long Island sound. Let's say he unofficially said it might work.
Actually has worked out well including 180 degree shifts, but bar goes back on when cruising further up the New Englands rocky coast.
Having shared above, do not know how the Rocna would fare without bar as an anchors balance is a delicate matter...

...aaahh nothing makes for a good nights sleep like a little tinkering with one's anchors...!
(after ***** around with your anchordesign just make 150% sure to never ever anchor upwind of us!)
