New windlass

Does anyone know of a windlass that ticks these boxes:

Chan Metric drum (10mm)
Drum is horizontal with deck
Drum also capable of rope
Two speed/gears - fast for letting out, low gear getting it back in

Cheers

Al

Re: New windlass

Currently a Lofrans Royal there (but very old and chain jumps of you let it spool out without motor).

Another requirement would be manual handle in case of electrical failure.

One more bit of info - there is a metal thimble in the rope where it changes to chain - is there such a thing as a gypsy that can handle this?

Re: New windlass

I'm unaware of a powered windlass that has multiple speeds. It's usually power up and down or just power up and open clutch for down. Lots of horizontal and vertical windlasses with a capstan drum for rope. All windlasses of appropriate size will be possible to get a gypsy for 10mm chain as long as it's one of the anchor chain standards, DIN766 or ISO. Gypsies that can handle hybrid chain/rope rodes need to have the rope spliced to the chain with a chain splice. They can't run a thimble eye through.

Look at the Anchorlift systems.

Re: New windlass

Check out the Maxwell HRC10-10. The gypsy handles a rope/chain combo nicely, it's fast, and it has a manual backup. Check their chainwheel guide to confirm it'll accept the chain you have.

Re: New windlass

I second Maxwell. Can't say which model is best for you though.

Have owned two. First one was fine but needed re-plating. Got to NZ and they had a killer sale on. Since you are in NZ and that is where they are made you can probably get a better deal than foreign made ones.
