Muir VR3000 Windless help

I should note, the scanned copy I have is not great. It is off a VERY faded paper copy. I’ve tried with various phone cameras, the Samsung gave the best results, but they were all pretty poorly.

Muir doesn’t list a VR300 Vertical Windlass, but they do list VR/VRC 250/3500/4000; all of which can be Manually operated.

Gord, Muir, bless their little engineering hearts, is staffed by friendly, helpful and excellent engineers.

However, they can’t find relevant paperwork with both hands and God holding the flashlight.

These old things were made thirty or more years ago. It is a testimony to their resilience that they are still going and it’s a good thing they are so reliable because the manual, even if you have it, is an utter joke.

The VE1000 and VE3000 are the same vertical windlass, with different motors, rated at 1000 lbs and 3000 lbs lift respectively.

The fact that these were made in the eighties, while Australia went metric in the sixties, you really can see all that you need to know about the company and it’s approach to change.

Of course, a VE454 and VE1363 don’t have quite such a catchy feel to the name.

The parts I need are the woodruff keys part nos 20 and the seal on top of part no 6.
Also There are 3 terminals on the motor (2 are bridged out) and I was which I connect the battery positive to (assuming the earth is through the casing).
is there any advise on these items.

Ok, part 20 is listed as “KEY, qty 2, 1/4” x 1 1/4” S.S.” Just to be clear, that is one quarter inch by one and one quarter inch.

Part number 6 is described as “BEARING, qty 1, 3 3/4” (flange) 2 3/4” long, cast”

That part number 6 I recall as being a solid bit of metal, I don’t remember a seal there on mine. What makes you think a seal is missing from there?

As for the wiring...

I started a thread on the wiring for these where I got some seriously invaluable help. It turns out you can reverse this model and I fitted a very cheap and nasty 4WD winch remote control kit from eBay which now allows me to raise and lower the anchor from the comfort of the cockpit. I will find that thread and post it here because there is some truly great stuff on the wiring which is well worth reading. In summary, the wiring is really simple while also very counter intuitive. Stay tuned...

Funny you should mention that, I just got asked about the handle by a CF member. I’m about to post a link to an old thread where I was trying to identify some mystery handles when I first bought the boat. The handle is in that post.
