Re: Anchors are a Drag... Waking Up On a Beach in Our Boat
Any anchor iPhone alarms use cell service to triangulate position, if I have the phone in the cabin I'm not picking up GPS service.

Mine uses the GPS chip in the phone as it works when I have no cell coverage and when I have phone portion off. For some reason I believe Apple chose to power the GPS chip with Wifi. Mine won't receive GPS unless wifi is on

There is also location services I believe? If you have that turned off your denying your apps knowing your location

Weavis,
Maybe he'll let you set the table, if you wash your hands first!

Ive had 2 experiences with unsetting anchors. In a harbour when the wind gets up, I find I get up and check a lot.......... Nothing is sure in boating...... nothing.
And Ken can set his own table.......

Apparently Apple made some odd design decisions regarding GPS. My Samsung phone and tablet both have built-in GPS with no odd dependencies and good accuracy. Receives fine below decks.

Its a very serious thing when your boat drags. Dragging should be a very seldom event. He has dragged twice in 3 weeks. He has a fear of weed and he has a fear of using his engines power to set his anchor. I also suspect that he is not using the correct scope even though he says he does.
Put out some more chain, he has 300ft of half inch
Anchor in deeper water
There is absolutely no need for all 20 boats to drag in those conditions.

Fuss is right. All 20 captains must have anchored wrong.

No they didn't . Where apple have a dedicated GPS fitted its works completely independently of all other communications functions. It does not needs 3G/cellular or wifi enabled. This includes iPhone 3GS, 4 , 5.
Where people get confused is with iPads , those that have no cellular facility also don't have a dedicated GPS. ( apple has both chips on the same daughter board ) however iOS simulates GPS via location services using wifi and cell towers leading people to beleive that they have GPS but that it needs wifi etc
Personally I've found apples GPS to be better them a the ones in droid land

Given that the anchor was right-sized and your technique was sound (as far as I can tell), I have to assume that your guess was correct and you hooked into six inches of sand over shale shelf or something equally unyielding. The "gentleness" of your near-grounding was probably simply due to the drag of the chain and the dead weight of the anchor themselves.
A cautionary tale and another point for an anchor alarm.

Re: Anchors are a Drag... Waking Up On a Beach in Our Boat
We met a German couple on a stop over in Leros, in the Greek Islands. We got together for a tea and were swapping war stories about our different offshore sailing trips. They had done 2 years in the Cape Horn area and that pretty much wiped out my adventures in comparisons but one story that is apropos is when we talked about dragging anchors. He was proud to tell me he had a Bugle anchor and felt it was one of the best and then he hesitated and said this...we were anchored in one bay for 3 days with winds in the 35-50 knot range. We were feeling quite safe after the 3rd day had passed but on the 4th day our anchor dragged. He said from then on I just believe it can happen no matter what you do. I agreed and said I had a chance to buy a Bugle anchor but I passed..he gave me this strange look and said "why was that"...I said because the damn things always let you down on the 4th day! We had a good laugh but the point is, no matter how sharp you think you are; you can be humbled by something that is not an exact science.

Yes, apparently that confuses a lot of people. Documentation issue maybe?
Would be interesting to crack open and iPad and a Samsung tablet and see what's inside. Odds are high that they have the same GPS chipset.
