We lift the dinghy with a swinging arm up to the arch on the stern. The outboard stays on at all times.
Hi Nick
I do like that gear shift, but never had much luck with Mercury in the past.
Good high performance but those reed valves in the carb were sensitive to any contamination.

Years back, worked for a company that had two large liveaboard ships that were roving sports fishing hotels
Had a total of 40 fishing guest in 20 boats each fishing for probably 14 hr's a day trying to catch Trophy king salmon.
Season from early June to late September

Tested them all in the field for 6 years
Mercs were the most temperamental even though we had a very good fueling system and bi weekly sampling of all tanks.

They probably have solved that problem by now, but I have always had best luck with Yamaha and now with 100:1 mix, trolls very nicely

Its interesting that both you and Jedi bought the CL340
I just took delivery of the CL310, which I love! (Along with the new Yamaha)

I could easily have taken the CL340, but comparing the specs, did not see enough difference to justify the higher costs

While 1ft longer LOA, same beam, same width and only 6" increase of inside length

13Lbs heavier and only 2Lbs in extra payload?....everything else exactly the same except for price.

What am I missing here in terms of value for the CL340??

A 310 dinghy is just not long enough for the hoisted up position on our arch. I sold our 310 and at the time the next step was 360 so used that for many years with a 25hp Enduro outboard. When that dinghy was worn out, I discovered there’s 340 size dinghies now so went for that and it is the perfect size for us. For US sizing: the 340 is 11’ right between the 10’ and 12’ dinghies.

Re: Which Outboard For Tender

Yes, that makes sense.
This is my first Highfield and it was interesting to compare side by side with my 2001 Achilles, which is longer but skinnier than the 310

I credit the Achilles lasting so long by always having sunbrella chaps fitted.
Chaps are now worn but hypallon is like new topsides.
Will sell, so hopefully new buyer will make new ones.

Something you might find interesting . With two strokes a 9.9 and 15 are the same cc's, with four strokes the 15 and 20 are the same . If there's anyone in Miami with a 15 horsepower 2s in good shape, I'm looking for one.

Re: Which Outboard For Tender

You can still get the Yamaha’s in the Bahamas at very good prices. 2 or 4 stroke.
I actually think I am going to go with the Suzuki DF15A. Four stroke EFI.
It’s light for a four stroke and feedback from all owners is only positive. Low emissions and very reliable along with excellent fuel economy. Sounds like a winner.

With the Suzukis, and others I think, the 9.9, 15 and 20 are all the same size and weight. The two smaller ones are just governed down.

The same goes for the other modern 4-stroke efi’s so to choose which one, all features need to be checked out. I went for the Mercury efi 20hp, which is the same as the Tohatsu efi 20hp apart for it’s revolutionary new tiller which is mounted in the center of the outboard instead of on the port side.

Some brands offer a 9.9 as well as a 9.8hp where the 9.8 is significantly lighter.

Re: Which Outboard For Tender

Is the 9.8 a 2 stroke?
I see that Tohatsu have a 2 and 4 stroke 9.8. Guessing the 9.8 is physically smaller and lighter than the 9.9/15/20.
Is it the same dimensions as the 6hp?

Yes it is. 26kg dry weight iirc.

Once again they are not EFI. Getting rid of the carburettor is a bonus for me.

I like the look of these

Re: Which Outboard For Tender

Everybody has different needs. But you're comparing a 26kg to a 45. That's over my limit. Secondly for me fuel injection is more complicated and more expensive. Personally I've had problems with carburetors on small engines but 10 horsepower or larger are pretty reliable, easy to maintain even if you have to take them off to clean them, and worst case scenario can be replaced for under a hundred bucks on most engines. PS. All engines should have a high quality pre filter, carburetor should be drained before long-term storage. And if you're really on the ball spray a lubricant in right as a carburetor is running out of gas
