splice eye help?

A bit of a newby question...
I have a 60ft by 25ft houseboat moored in a windy marina. (at times)
I bought some "mooring rope" that already has an eye on one end & wish to put another on the other end.
I intend having a fixed length on one side of the boat to poles/posts/pylons so it goes from bollard on boat around post and back to bollard.
The second one on the other side will be eye over bollard, around post & tied after taking up slack back onto the bollard.
OK, the rope I bought is something I haven't come across before.
It has a black braid over a white braid over a 3 core twisted centre.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mooring-...UAAOSwODFacmSE
I've spent half a day trying to copy some online instructions but am beat!
The 3 core twisted centre makes things a bit difficult!!
Any/all help appreciated!!

Re: splice eye help?

There are many step by step videos that will help you splice the dock lines.
Here is an example

http://www.samsonrope.com/Pages/Spli...tructions.asps

For dock lines I prefer 3 strand over dubbe branded line, it’s easy to splice and it has more elastic stretch. So it acts like a shock absorber

Re: splice eye help?

Here is a corrected link: Splice Instructions

However, Samson does not make, as far as I know, double braid plus core rope, so they do not publish instructions for them.

I would suggest using a more suitable rope, such as 3 strand nylon.

Re: splice eye help?

Thankyou for the info so far.
I found a Youtube video that suggests I should cut out the core.
Wouldn't that weaken it?

Re: splice eye help?

Contact the seller and ask for the manufacturers splicing directions, or at least the manufacturers name.

Good idea, Paul!

Hi, BruceS,

If you want a proper splice, I think you'll have to follow Paul L's suggestion. However, it is possible to make sewn eyes. You might want to Google that and see if you think you might trust them. Jim uses them a lot, but I don't know if he would use them for what you want to do.

Re: splice eye help?

Yep I've sent the seller a few questions and am waiting for a reply.
I'll take a look at Google for your suggestion as well.
For my intended use there's no need for a 'perfect job' but if I can ..........

Re: splice eye help?

If anyone else is following this thread .... I got a reply from the seller pointing me to a Youtube video.

I haven't attempted it yet but it looks much easier than the other video I was trying to use. Finish looks good too.

Re: splice eye help?

Personally I would not buy no-name rope off eBay. You have no idea what you’re actually getting.

Take three strand for example. Buy some quality Samson three stand then go to your local hardware store and buy nylon three strand. The hardware store stuff is complete junk.

I agree that three strand is the better solution for you. More durable in that application, stretchier, and super easy to splice.
