Congratulations on the new yacht.

As you know, we have just sailed 2,443nm in the last 2.5 months, with polyester sheets. Went to Whitworths and puchased by the 100m Textech Double Braid Polyester by the reel, saved about 25% on the price. The halyards I went for Spectraspeed, apart from the topping lift and spinnaker halyard which are polyester (don’t have a spinnaker, mainly used for lifting the dinghy). All up it was around $4k, with the halyards being replaced by a rigger.

You were told wrong. I've been embarrassed by cats on upwind legs a few times. How they get upwind so well is a mystery to me, but some of them do. Not heavily laden condo cats, of course, but heavily laden monos don't either. Actually surprisingly few cruising boats of either hull persuasion can make useful miles directly upwind.

Dark Hollow was full so we went further up and spent the first night at Sandstones, agree it is a lovely spot. Arrived Xmas day not realising the Launcestion to Hobart race meant that the Beauty Point marina was full.

I don't know any yacht that that can make any miles 'directly upwind'.
Maybe you meant 'miles made good towards destination' when the destination is directly to windward?

That depends on a lot more than quality of sails and cordage.

Boat design for one and the two extremes are as bad as each other - you don't want to be in a boat that slams.
What the crew is up for is another- see above re slamming.

And of course sea state.
There is a massive difference between working to windward across the trades for a few weeks with a nice established sea state and trying to make any miles to windward at all in -say - Canal Messier - when a 20 knot northerly has been blowing on the nose for a mere two hours and it will be dark in an hour and you are five miles from your chosen destination.

Having covered most of that ground - apart from the last little bit - on more than a few occasions - I remain impressed with Tilman getting 'Mischief' from the Amelia Glacier to Panama with no engine - and he had no fancy cordage back then.

I’m a rigger. Use Sta-Set or equivalent for everything. Unless you’re a racing fanatic. You can get it for around $3.50US a foot average cost. If you wish to go more $ on the main Halyard, that’s a worthy upgrade, otherwise basic Nylon Double braid is plenty. Any local shop will splice - $20 or so.

If you want a quick and dirty #, just price a 600' spool of rope...(<grin> when it is still on the spool, it's rope, right?). My Herreshoff schooner took two spools, your boat will be a good bit less. Standing rigging CAN be replaced with galvanized 7x7...which will be good for nearly 10 years, even if you spend some time in the Tropics. I had wire/rope halyards, so got a book on splicing such, but with the low stretch fiber rope available now, that solution is passé. Best of luck to you 'learning how'.....and do not forget your goal, 'Cruising' is a skill all on its own...pretty much separate from those needed for sailing. I lived aboard for 12 years, traveled about 50k...and pretty much missed out on the people part...except when we were in Alaska, due to the language barrier and my failure to bridge that somehow or another. -Veteran '66-68
