Advice on whisker pole lengths

I'm looking for a whisker pole for my cutter's jib. The J measurement is 17 feet but the longest pole I can find at the used spot is 15 feet. Would it be stupid to get the 15 or would that be better than nothing?

Thanks

Re: Advice on whisker pole lengths

If, like many cutter rigged boats, you don't fly a genoa with a big overlap the 15 foot pole will indeed be "better than nothing", and in fact, pretty useful. I wouldn't worry about the missing couple of feet.

Joseph, have you checked anchors and oars In stevenville. Or bacons in annapolis?

Maybe a telescoping pole could be sourced or buy a longer fixed length pole and remove one end of the pole and trim it down and reattach the end…

Re: Advice on whisker pole lengths

According to Forespar:
Whisker poles should be 100% of the foot of whichever headsail is being flown.

Measure from the tack to the clew and the whisker pole should be this length. You need to have some overlap in the pole. Poles telescoped to their maximum length are at their weakest, strength-wise.

Anchor's has the 15. I don't bother with Bacon anymore too spendy.
