Question What's the best oil for an SD60 saildrive on a 3JH5CE?

What's the best oil for an SD60 saildrive on a 3JH5CE?

I'm changing it myself and don't care about the price as much as the quality. My Google-** is failing me since I've been looking around for the past half hour without definitive answers

Thanks!!

Re: What's the best oil for an SD60 saildrive on a 3JH5CE?

I don’t have a saildrive myself, but was interested so I looked and it appears that Yanmar specifies a 15W-40 oil.
Now if true that tells me that it doesn’t have any special oil needs and they spec’ d what your most likely to have already as multi viscosity oil in a heartbeat case is unusual, cause they don’t often run at high temps.
Then again I don’t know if it means anything, but some high performance differentials for automobiles recommend against synthetics, but specify short oil change intervals.

If nothing else this ought to at least bump your thread, but gut makes me think any good engine oil is fine, but change it often of course watching for it to turn milky.

I’m posting as much to bump your thread and learn something myself

Re: What's the best oil for an SD60 saildrive on a 3JH5CE?

Someone said that I can use the QuickSilver High Performance Gear Lube SAE 90:

https://www.amazon.com/Quicksilver-8.../dp/B006JIA1DI

Does that make sense? Or should I just ignore them and use 15W-40?

And if does already have the Quicksilver Gear Lube, how do I make sure I remove it completely before adding 15W-40? I can't imagine I can mix the two together

It's a Yanmar 3JH5E 40hp diesel engine with an SD60 saildrive, hence Yanmar labeled it as a 3JH5CE, I believe.

Nevermind... I'm an idiot. I have the SD50.

And, as per:

https://www.yanmar.fi/content/downlo...02-12-2008.pdf

It shows that the Quicksilver High Performance SAE 90 Gear Lube is recommended and works perfectly.

Hope this helps someone else
