Gear Oil for Yanmar 3JH5CE

I changed boats this year. The new boat has a Yanmar 3JH5CE engine with saildrive. The handbook seems quite strict that only Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube be used.
I have almost 5 litres of Volvo Penta transmission oil left over from previous boat (also Yanmar 3YM30 with saildrive).
What damage would it do if I used the Volvo Penta Oil? Secondarily, does oil "go off" if I have it for a year unused?
Thanks

Wow... old thread. But I just searched for a solution to a very similar question. Any thoughts from the more experienced sailors on Cruisers Forum?

Re: Gear Oil for Yanmar 3JH5CE

I have the same 3JH5CE engine with saildrive SD50. If it's SD50, I'd recommend the Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube. It's cheap in the U.S. About $10-$15 per bottle. Great oil and highly recommend it to anyone who has the SD50.

Hope this helps someone else in need
