Gear shifter cal Crusing 46

Hello folks

After 5 years of keeping the replacement cable in my engine room, I finally managed to replaced and install the new Morse 31’ red cable kill switch in my Cal Cruising 46
Because of work slowdown due to corona virus

In the process I have noticed another problem: that the red cable, which controls the transmission (forward or reverse cable) from the outside helm gear shift, has been badly chafed and is hanging by a thread, though it still works
Perfectly fine. It needs to be replaced ASAP

My question is
Does anyone know how LONG this red Morse cable is (gear shifter cable)

It’s the cable from the outside gear shifter to the engine transmission which is located In the rear of the boat (V drive )

Would appreciate any info and insight into the replacement procedure

Thanks in advance

Edwin

Usually the length of the cable is printed somewhere on the outer red sheath of the cable, though sometimes it can be faded or worn off and hard to find.

In any case, you need to take the old one out to put the new one in. Take it out, take it to the shop, and say "I want one of these, please." Hopefully the person you are talking to measures it the right way (sheath length or knob to knob length?) and hands to you or orders for you the right one.

If the old one goes through impossible to reach places, tape the end of a wire snake to one end before you pull the other end, and leave the snake in place to help you pull through the new one.

I used surplus cables (throttle and tranny) in my build, and within one year had the throttle go out while trying the dock at my own dock, and the gear shift go out in a crowded marina. Glad to hear you are replacing this accident waiting to happen.

If you are on Facebook, you may want to join the Cal Boats group. There are a couple CAL 46 owners there.

If the length is printed on the cable it will be near one or both ends. The call-out length is over-all- from end to end of the threads.

Thanks again
My sailing family of friends

I will look for it on the side of the cable
And removing it’s is an absolute nightmare
Which may involve cutting a large access window inside the pilot house

Thank you

Hi
It might be worth fitting for emergencies (a jammed or stuck cable) a quick connect ball joint down below at throttle and transmission; crew can move levers when you call. Useful for close manoeuvring.

That’s a great idea

A crew can turn it

I’ll keep that in mind

Thank you
