It goes both ways. Give as little notice as possible, a couple of years is enough for most companies to get over their butt hurt.

I've got to go with the honourable way guys. I fixed the date, gave 6 months notice and helped in the transition period to the 2 guys who took over. I had a great sendoff and get called back for all expenses paid (even 6 months marina fees in Dunkirk) consultancy.
My motto is 'My word is my bond' it's stood me in good stead and now I can enjoy the cruising life.

Thanks kmacdonald. I had to do the right thing by my work because it put the bread on my table every day and I was able to save enough to 'Live the dream'. We're certainly having a terrific time in and around the European canal system and the Med and wondered how ever I found time to punch in 80/100 hour weeks but it's all been worth it I'm so lucky to be a part of the happy brotherhood of the cruising friends we've met, and others we've yet to meet along the way.

You didn't ask but as a retired (and recovering) Fortune 300 VP of Human Resources I suggest the respectful thing to do is explain the whole thing to your boss as soon as possible and before (s)he finds out about it from another source. Tell her you've been agonizing over it and explain why. Better from your lips and with your words. You may want to return some day and you will want/need a reference at some point.

You have already given too many details to keep it secret for long. Therefore, no matter what was the best plan before you posted on the forum, you might want to consider what are the odds of this finding its way to your boss.

The wife and I just told management today of our plans to leave in 90 days and were both granted 2 year leaves of absence, as that’s the plan for now, we can ask for an extension in the future. We both have good reputations at the company we work for and have strong succession plans that are ready to be implemented. We got nothing but positive comments and coaching on how to reenter our company upon our return.

Quite a relief as we were both somewhat stressed thinking about this conversation.

My personal experience:

Back when I was working, I decided to take 2 years off to backpack around the world. I was on good terms with my boss, and I gave him a YEARS's notice of my plan. He came back to me a few months later with a counteroffer: take 3 months of unpaid leave every year, do the trip in stages, and work in between. I accepted the offer, and continued to work for him for 10 more years on that basis. When his successor wouldn't honor the arrangement I quit, giving 30 MINUTES notice.

Actually, this will be my last job. So, looking to impress some putz in a suit so I can climb back into that looney bin or any other isn't an issue. I just turned 58. I will take my piddly little pension, my savings and my beat up old boat and see how many sea miles I can get on the log before I end up in a box 6 feet under. If I want to work it will be as a boat handy man, with my own tools and for fun, not to make a living. I don't have a lot of money but what I have will do for me. I don't have champagne tastes. More like home brew wine.

As for my company, they just gave themselves a multimillion dollar Xmas present by talking our union and its members into supporting a two tier pay scale. I expect the race is now on to see if I can get gone before they pronounce my understaffed, overworked, and constantly sabotaged group as no longer being cost effective and they send the work to a new group at half the labor cost. I think their guarantees to the older guys are just so much hogwash but we will see.

Right now I'm working for only one reason and that is to get SD in the water by the end of April and outfitted to my live aboard standards by the end of the summer. Winter over at the club and get the rest done then head down the St Lawrence.
