Irony noun
the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.

Indeed, [my bad] Poe's Law applied yet again.

Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.

Poe's law is based on a comment written by Nathan Poe in 2005 on christianforums.com, an Internet forum on Christianity. The post was made during a debate on creationism, where a previous poster had remarked to another user: "Good thing you included the winky. Otherwise people might think you are serious".Poe then replied, "Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake for the genuine article".

Nota bene to self: Don't forget to include the emoji.

All the best.

Re: The BVI's, a word of caution

This thread has been closed because it discussed politics not related to sailing or cruising.

The community rules we all agreed to when we joined state that discussion of politics is only permitted when related to the subject of the forum. Because it is a privately owned forum, the owner sets the rules: this is not a free speech situation.

If a CF member wants to have political chit chat, he or she has to take it off site.
