Selling La Vagabonde?

I was just catching up on the latest episode of "Sailing La Vagabonde". At the very end, Riley mentioned that their Cat was up for sale. There are hints online of the same. I know Elayna is getting further along with her pregnancy and maybe it's time for them to take a break and raise a family.

I will be sad to see them go. They were real pioneers with vlogging.

As far as I understand that will have another boat coming but they haven't officially announced it yet.

He is keen on a more efficient boat that can sail better in light airs. I assume he is also going to announce a deal with Oceanvolt as well.

I'm not sure he'll find such a boat that is also livable.

I am bias of course but Schionnings are boats that can have it all, performance, livability, and price. I don't think that's what he is getting, but it would do what he wants really well, probably better than anything else out there.

Assuming a modern lighter performance cruising cat, let's also not forget that simply the ability to set more sail area for light wind conditions will go a long way towards helping solve this problem.

So in general, a bigger rig, with the caveat that you will probably need a reef in the main already at 10kn true (just like a race boat).

And/or the ability to set bigger free flying sails, so a bigger bowsprit, etc too maybe.

Retractable propulsion is a good idea as well to help reduce drag (amoung other benefits).

Extra waterline length is mostly always helpful and enables you to carry a given amount of cruising payload better, with slimmer more easily driven hulls than a shorter boat would need for that same payload.

There's no real magic required here. All the ingredients are well known:

- keep the boat compartively light
- have comparatively long waterline length
- have comparatively slimmer hulls
- reduce underwater drag
- set comparatively larger sail area

Think an old school Danson era Outremer such as a 55 light conceptually / visually.

Basically just add 20% more waterline to an equivalent sized cat and you start to be in right range to start with. Eg: most 45-50ft cruising cats have enough space onboard for a cruising couple and a couple of kids. Now add 20% to the waterline but keep the accomodation volume similar.

No, that's not what I wrote...

Although I suppose conceptually you could think "an Outremer on steriods".

I don't think they make a model quite so far in this direction at the moment.

Yes Outremer is still at the performance end of cruising cats, and yes they still have much better light air performance than the average cruising cat too.

But if I understand what Riley wants - basically if there is ANY wind then not having to motor - then that needs another step beyond what is currently offered from their range.

A lot more sail area, and the willingness (and skill and experience) to realise that sail area will start needing to be reduced at say 10kn true, because full sail will be optimised for 3/4/5kn true.

As I said, more towards race boat levels of power to weight ratio.

Most cruising boats are way underpowered sail area wise, especially in light air.

Lots of upgrades including Dave Calvert high performance carbon sails. Main & Jib Calvert Offshore Load Path laminate sails w/ carbon. Calvert tri-radial carbon code0, 710 sq ft, that will sail at 55 deg awa. She will sail at 100% windspeed in 5 knots of wind.

Now from a full time live aboard cruising context it might make sense to trade off such high tech laminate for something more reasonable plus added sail area.

Although nothing to stop having a high tech laminate Code 0 such as that, given that it won't be up in all conditions.

They bought it, but got a deal, as well some help with arranging finance.
