1968 Columbia 28

Just wondering how the aft mast stay is attached on my Columbia 28. There are aluminum plates on top and bottom with screws or bolts that attach from the deck plate. The screws don't go through the bottom plate, so are the holes tapped into the bottom plate only part way? I want to save myself some time, energy and money before I take this thong apart to investigate.

Thanks

Not exactly sure of your description but the chainplate, I believe has a bolt above the rub rail, or hull/deck joint and then two or three bolts in the hull below, if the plate wraps over the rub rail. Those bolts should go through with backing plates behind. Or if a PO put a split backstay on there that may be different, but screws will never work.
