Westerbeke 40 Water Pump

Hi, I've got a shot water pump">raw water pump on my Westerbeke 40, which is very similar to Perkins 4-108. The Westerbeke PN is 016423, and when I look up the price for a new one from Westerbeke, it's $944!!!!

It's a Sherwood pump, and one would think you could get a new one for more like $500, but so far, no joy. Does anyone out there with a W40 have some magic bullet for me? The boat is a Pearson 367, and it's the same engine on the 365 if I am not mistaken.

By the way, the Sherwood part number is either G65 or F85, and the Westerbeke PN seems to cross to the G65, but it's not clear. A Sherwood G65 for a Perkins costs about $530, but it is not clear that it will work for a Westerbeke.

Sorry, I was thinking the freshwater pump. I should have known from "sherwood". I haven't had the 4-108 for years but it seems to me there are other brands etc available that fit. Hopefully someone will chime in.

You can rebuild the pump. Seal is about $26.00 If you need the shat and bearings its about $150 more. You'll need your friendly auto repair guy to press in the bearings to the pump casing. Otherwise the rest is easily doable. I bought a g-65 for about $450.00

My spare pump, which is not really a spare, is in exactly the same shape as the one described in the thread about re-building. Might be able to re-build it, but I still need a (functioning) spare. The one pulled from the engine two days ago may or may not be truly shot. The bearing is definitely shot, and I dodged a bullet in terms of it being so far gone that raw water flow was close to zero. You can wiggle the shaft with your fingers. If I knew for sure the G65 would fit the W40, I'd just buy it. Maybe I should buy it and see if it fits, and return it if it doesn't (have to check the Defender return policy).

We have a Westerbeke 46, which has a Mitsubishi block. (1988 vintage.) After hours and hours of searching online and through dealers and retailers, we found ONE online that said it was a match, so we ordered it. Well, it was a match in every way - EXCEPT for the bolt pattern! (No way to change that, so no way to bolt it to the engine.)

We ended up having our original pump rebuilt for about $65 USD in Portland, Oregon. Only one place in the city we could find to rebuild it, a really old guy in a really old shop who had been rebuilding water pumps for years.

We bit the bullet and bought a new one from a Westerbeke dealer for the un-godly price you mentioned. But, we're cruising and can't be without a spare.

We have since found several engines being parted out, and could have picked up a used one and had it rebuilt also for a fraction of the cost of a new one. $944 is really expensive for red paint.

I did some more research, and it looks like the Westerbeke replacement pump is a Sherwood F85. But even that is > $700.

So it looks like rebuilding is the way to go.

The Perkins 4108 pump and the 4107 are similar as is the Westerbeke. I buy all my parts for my 4107 from the following suppliers. I have looked up the pumps and provided the links for you. https://www.parts4engines.com/perkin...aw-water-pump/

Thanks to all. I believe from checking photos, it is an F85 pump (the G65 has two equally sized flanges, whereas the F85 has one smaller than the other). I'll rebuild both my pumps.

I would try a rebuilding if you do not want do do it yourself, try the Flying Dutchman, he rebuilds pumps, had him do one for a friends boat and he did a quality job

What year is that engine? I have a 1997 42b and I think I only paid about $450 for the pump (8 YEARS AGO MAYBE) from Westerbeke.
For freshwater pump my block is a Mitsubusi K4F and you can get that for about $70
